Whether you’re in the Republic of Ireland’s second-biggest city for business or pleasure (or both), the Clarion Hotel Cork is in an excellent location -- overlooking the River Lee and just 10 minutes’ walk from the city centre.
There’s plenty to see in Cork -- walk along the quay and into town for the Merchant’s Quay Shopping Centre, the foodie heaven of the English Market and the Opera House. Stroll a little further for St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, with its unexpectedly whimsical architecture, and further still -- actually around 15 minutes’ drive west -- for the imposing Cork City Gaol, now a museum.
Back at the hotel, Kudos Bar & Restaurant serves wine, local craft beers and fresh Asian food -- look for duck hoi sin, king prawn stir fry and chicken laksa. Food is also served all day at the Atrium Café, with tapas available Tuesday-Friday evenings. In the morning, there’s a plentiful breakfast buffet, with everything from cereals and yoghurts to bacon and eggs.
The hotel’s SanoVitae Health and Fitness Club has a gym and 18-metre pool -- swimming caps are mandatory but these can be bought from SanoVitae reception. The spa offers a range of treatments (charges apply), plus a sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi.
The good-sized bedrooms have been simply finished and have king-size beds, free mineral water and WiFi and baths and showers in the bathroom. Family rooms are also available with an extra single bed or pull-out sofa. Some rooms overlook the internal atrium.
