"Friendly check-in. Excellent service from staff. Couldn't fault the breakfast & hospitality tray very well stocked & replaced daily. Good quality towels & toiletries. On a regular bus route into the city so no need to battle the traffic. Room adequate but could do with a spruce up. Only room for one chair though, a bit on the small side."

Bailbrook Lodge is a Grade II-listed Georgian country house on the outskirts of Bath, "the grandest and most elegant" city in England, according to Condé Nast Traveller.

The property is around 10 minutes' drive from attractions including Pulteney Bridge, the Roman Baths and the Royal Crescent, while Castle Combe Circuit is a 25-minute drive away and Bristol is 35 minutes by car.

The guest house has a bar and a lounge where breakfast is served each morning. There are also restaurants 10 minutes' drive away in central Bath, including Brasserie Brunel at Royal Hotel Bath, Bailbrook Lodge's sister property. Other dining options include riverside pubs within 10 minutes' walk of the hotel.

Bailbrook Lodge holds four AA Gold Stars -- these are awarded to the "very best properties offering excellent levels of quality throughout and outstanding levels of hospitality and service", says The AA. Rooms are individually designed, and some have views of the property's pretty gardens and the Avon Valley beyond. There is no lift but ground-floor rooms can be requested.

There is a bus stop less than a minute's walk from the property with a regular service into the city centre.

We were advised that the lodge is being sold at the end of September so would wait for reviews following that before returning in case food or service declines.

When I booked the hotel,I believe that it was a package. My husband and I had this in mind after attending a conference in Telford and was expecting to book lunch on arrival and it was going to be a chilling out experience. We were told the restaurant was fully booked, meaning, no lunch for us and was recommended to book elsewhere. I wasn't happy so far so we decided to go to the restaurant which was a mile or 2 from the lodge. We were hungry and tired to set off again but we know it wasn't fair at all as we've already paid and expecting better. On the way,the restaurant manager phoned me and offered lunch on the last day of our visit. No apologies but was made to feel like he was doing us a favour. We decided to take what he offered. For this reason, I feel cheated and conned. To top that, on checking out, I was charged for the brown bread cheese and pickle sandwich we requested. This was below expectations.

The bistro food was good
Other Comments
The room was so tiny that the two of us could hardly move around it, there was a sink next to the bed. We asked to move rooms but the hotel said no. It must have been the smallest room in the place. Breakfast was served 45 minutes after ordering Staff were quite rude and not very accommodating when we tried to book the bistro and move rooms
