Overview

Tucked away at the end of a long driveway, The Ickworth is a "rejuvenating retreat" (The Daily Telegraph) in the village of Horringer in Suffolk. The Grade I-listed Palladian building sits in extensive grounds roamed by deer, on an estate that was once owned by the aristocratic Hervey family and the Earl of Bristol. Today the building houses a hotel, as well as a living museum run by the National Trust.

You can explore the 1800 acres of parkland and play tennis or croquet in the gardens, or explore the National Trust house with a free pass from reception. Children can burn off energy in the fairy garden, with its trampoline and climbing frame. Adults can hire bikes for £10 per day.

Guests can borrow wellies, and there's a choice of 400 DVDs at reception, with daily film showings in the cinema. There is also an Ofsted-registered crèche (£13 per child, per two hours), a baby-listening service and babysitters (extra charges apply). Older children and adults can hang out in the games room, which has a PlayStation and an Xbox 360, as well as table tennis, table football and giant draughts.

The 2-AA-Rosette fine-dining Frederick's Restaurant has views of the Italianate gardens and is adults-only in the evenings, whereas the Conservatory restaurant serves less formal fare, including pizzas, steak and antipasti platters.

Bedrooms are split between the east wing of the manor and the lodge, which is half a mile from the main house. The restaurant and treatment rooms are in the east wing, and the indoor swimming pool is in an external building. Dogs can stay in selected rooms for £15 per dog, per night (please enquire on booking).

You can try your hand at clay pigeon shooting at Wild Tracks Off-Road Activity Park, spend an afternoon horse-riding at Barrow Hall Stables or fish at Larkwood Trout Fishery (all within 25 minutes' drive of the hotel; extra charges apply). The market town of Bury St Edmunds is a 10-minute drive away and Cambridge is less than 50 minutes' drive.

Relaxing, apart from the kids (it was half term - our mistake) and the weather (God's fault). Everything else great.

Clean, comfortable room, lovely bathroom except for the bath which was quite difficult to access. We enjoyed the food especially the breakfast, excellent coffee! A wonderful setting. Very pleasant and helpful staff..What’s not to like. Would certainly book again when visiting East Anglia.

We celebrated our Ruby wedding anniversary at The Ickworth seven and a half years ago,it was nice to revisit but there were obvious changes since then. The food was our biggest disappointment, you have a£35.00 towards your meal but it was, in our opinion so overpriced, you had little to choose from. One of the choices was off the menu but there was no replacement offered which was bad as the menu was extremely limited in the first place!

Most of the stay was very enjoyable. However we ate in Fredericks restaurant and were very disappointed with the food. Some of it was so undercooked (gnocchi) it was almost raw (not even al dente). The butternut squash was so overcooked it was like a rice pudding and was almost cold. The Thais fishcakes (starter) were dry and overcooked. It was obvious that the meals were kept under a heat lamp for so long they had started to congeal. The buffet cooked breakfast was dry and not hot.
