When visiting the Lake District, it seems opportune to stay as close to an actual lake as possible. Beech Hill Hotel has picturesque views over Lake Windermere and the Western Fells, and many of the bedrooms have private balconies to make the most of the vistas.
As well as a multitude of walking trails and mountains to climb on your doorstep, Windermere golf club and Bowness-on-Windermere town are both less than a 10-minute drive. Kendal is 20 minutes’ by car -- on the way, pop into Hawkshead Brewery at Staveley -- and 20 minutes in the other direction (to the southern end of the lake) is the Lakeland Motor Museum, a fantastic collection of motor memorabilia from the past 100 years.
The hotel has an indoor swimming pool on site, and Wi-Fi is free in the lounge, which has more of those lake views. It’s a pleasant place to sit with a book, borrow one of the many board games or sip on an aperitif before dinner is served. The AA-Rosette Burlington’s menu features local Cumbrian fare prominently – expect dishes such as parsnip, thyme and cheddar soup, flame grilled veal sirloin steak, and foraged gooseberry crumble with custard and vanilla bean ice cream. In the morning, a breakfast buffet is served with a good choice of cereal, pastries, fruit, yoghurt and cooked options.
Upstairs, the bedrooms are a good size with large beds and walk-in showers. Many have direct access to the landscaped gardens, or views over the lake. Particularly impressive is the Wordsworth Suite, with an antique oak bed, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Windermere, a roll-top bath, and a private garden area with a hot tub. Guests staying in this room also get private access to the pool after 9pm.
