The South Lodge Victorian country-house hotel is set amongst acres of woodland and parkland in Horsham, West Sussex. The neo-Jacobean 5-star hotel is part of the Pride of Britain Hotels and the Small Luxury Hotels of the World collections. Housed in an elegant ivy-covered manor that dates from the 19th century, this luxury hotel is less than five miles from Nymans garden and less than 10 miles from central Crawley.
The hotel is on the edge of High Weald, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a mosaic of small farms, woodlands, historic parks, sunken lanes and ridge-top villages -- perfect for ramblers to explore the area.
Once the family home of a noted Victorian botanist, the hotel's grounds are home to hundreds of camellias and rhododendrons, and the 2-AA-Rosette Camellia Restaurant is named accordingly. The restaurant uses fresh vegetables from the hotel's walled kitchen garden and uses local Sussex produce.
The 6-course tasting-menu dinner is in the Pass Restaurant which has a Michelin star. Guests can have an exclusive gourmet Chef's Table experience with head chef Matt Gillan, who has appeared on "Saturday Kitchen" with celebrity chef James Martin.
For more informal dining or an afternoon tea, try the Georgian Bar & Lounge, which also offers al fresco dining. There's also a restored Victorian wine cellar. All wines are available by the glass and guests can purchase a "decanting card".
There are 89 rooms in total and some have views of the grounds, 4-poster beds, balconies and roll-top baths. Every bedroom has handmade mattresses, hand-finished duvets and a pillow menu.
Other facilities at the hotel include tennis, croquet, archery and clay-pigeon shooting. Nearby you can try horse riding, or golf at Mannings Heath.
