Overview

Dumbleton Hall Hotel is a Grade II-listed manor house set in 19 acres of private grounds bordered by woodland. The present building sits on the site of the original 16th-century house, and once hosted the novelist Elizabeth Gaskell and the poet John Betjeman, who is reputed to have written three of his poems here. We visited the property and loved the stunning views of the Vale of Evesham and the surrounding Cotswolds countryside.

The ancient market town of Winchcombe, with its quaint shops, pubs and tea rooms, is 10 minutes' drive away. The ruins of 13th-century Hailes Abbey, where you can follow an audio tour or visit the museum, are within a 15-minute drive. You can also visit Tewkesbury -- a 20-minute drive away -- to see the medieval buildings and narrow alleyways that surround the Benedictine abbey.

Cheltenham, Stratford-upon-Avon and Batsford Arboretum, a 56-acre botanical garden with one of the largest collections of trees and shrubs in England, are around 30 minutes' drive away. Gloucester, with its 11th-century cathedral, is 35 minutes' drive from the hotel.

Dinner and Sunday lunch are served in The Cedar Tree Restaurant, which has an extensive wine list. Afternoon tea, coffee and bar snacks are available in The Olive Lounge, and drinks are served in The Library Bar and Lounge.

Bedrooms vary in size and character but all have views of the gardens or the Vale of Evesham. Dogs are welcome, but not in the public rooms (fees apply; see policies for details).

There were a couple of problems with table reservation (not their fault as hotel full and you had to book your time and the couple at the table we were having overstayed their slot and had arrived late) this wasn’t the staff fault and they provided us with free drinks in the bar and a bottle of wine with our meal as a way of saying sorry. They did the best they could have done with a situation that was not of their making

Front of desk service on arrival excellent and sorted an upgrade for us straight away (if only for the 1 night). Service at dinner was lacking, with wine order not arriving until WELL after delivery of starter and then the wrong wine was opened and brought to the table. Our room on night 2 (we had to move out of the upgraded room due to it being booked for 3 nights) was tired in appearance, although equally lovely views and quiet. Some attention to detail would lift the whole feel of the place, eg. clean wine glasses on the table, cigarette butts to be picked up from the lawns, whole shower screens to be cleaned, and continuous presence of a bartender at the bar, as we had to wander for a while to find someone to serve us. The staff were friendly, professional and welcoming and attended to our needs, however on occasions, we had to find them to ask for what we wanted, rather than them being "around" and attending to us. Notwithstanding this, we would return to this hotel again with pleasure.

The building is absolutely amazing and the surroundings around the hall are breathtaking.
Other Comments
The inside of the hall is very outdated and run down and there was an old musty smell in the bedroom corridors. The food was really disappointing, over cooked vegetables with a less than exciting menu. I had the pork belly which wasn't cooked particularly well and the dessert was sickly and wasn't a lemon tart but a lemon cheesecake. The breakfast again was really disappointing. Bad quality products which tasted cheap. The other main issue was the staff in the restaurant, a large group of extremely young teenagers who were very polite but with no experience at all which showed. I felt that their customer service was poor through no fault at their own. The cleanliness of the bathroom was also questionable, the toilet wasn't properly clean with a stained toilet seat and there were also several hairs on the floor. This is not what you expect from such a grand place like dumbleton hall. Without the beautiful exterior of this building I don't think people would really bother to visit this place. We were also charged for newspapers which we were not informed about when we were asked, the question was merely "would you like a newspaper in the morning?" It should be made clear that this is chargeable, I have never had to pay for a newspaper at a hotel before.
