Why We Love It

  • This 19th-century manor sits in 19 acres of grounds with a private lake
  • It's on the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, close to the villages of Dumbleton and Winchcombe
  • Nearby towns include Stratford-upon-Avon, Tewkesbury and Evesham
  • We visited the hotel and loved the peaceful atmosphere and the long sweeping driveway

Dumbleton Hall Hotel is a Grade II-listed manor house set in 19 acres of private grounds bordered by woodland. The present building sits on the site of the original 16th-century house, and once hosted the novelist Elizabeth Gaskell and the poet John Betjeman, who is reputed to have written three of his poems here. We visited the property and loved the stunning views of the Vale of Evesham and the surrounding Cotswolds countryside.

The ancient market town of Winchcombe, with its quaint shops, pubs and tea rooms, is 10 minutes' drive away. The ruins of 13th-century Hailes Abbey, where you can follow an audio tour or visit the museum, are within a 15-minute drive. You can also visit Tewkesbury -- a 20-minute drive away -- to see the medieval buildings and narrow alleyways that surround the Benedictine abbey.

Cheltenham, Stratford-upon-Avon and Batsford Arboretum, a 56-acre botanical garden with one of the largest collections of trees and shrubs in England, are around 30 minutes' drive away. Gloucester, with its 11th-century cathedral, is 35 minutes' drive from the hotel.

Dinner and Sunday lunch are served in The Cedar Tree Restaurant, which has an extensive wine list. Afternoon tea, coffee and bar snacks are available in The Olive Lounge, and drinks are served in The Library Bar and Lounge.

Bedrooms vary in size and character but all have views of the gardens or the Vale of Evesham. Dogs are welcome, but not in the public rooms (fees apply; see policies for details).

The situation and the grounds were very nice, but due to the weather which was very mucky underfoot we only ventured out once.

quite disappointing for a country house hotel, very cold on arrival, large fire place but very small fire no logs available to put on, lounge and bar both had empty fireplaces. The double room.was extreamly small it was long and narrow, you had to turn sideways to get to the head of the bed, decoration of room was very oppressive, again radiators in room were only luke warm ,we tried to adjust it but it did not work. Bed was lumpy,, we went down for dinner, but it was still cold everywhere, after we had eaten, we returned to the room and wrapped ourselves in the blankets and watched tv. The bathroom was huge but no chair to sit on . They had a wedding event on that weekend and I would say that their attention was more on that than guests staying at the hotel.

The food, breakfast was particularly good.
Other Comments
The hotel is like a stately home with lots of hard wood panels and etchings on the walls. The heating failed to come on in our room but electric heaters were provided promptly and a room change offered. The staff are polite and helpful . It is well located for the attractive towns and NT sites of the Cotswolds.
