Why We Love It

  • This 19th-century manor sits in 19 acres of grounds with a private lake
  • The property is on the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, close to the villages of Dumbleton and Winchcombe
  • Nearby towns include Stratford-upon-Avon, Tewkesbury and Evesham
  • We visited the hotel and loved the peaceful atmosphere and the long sweeping driveway

Dumbleton Hall Hotel is a Grade II-listed manor house set in 19 acres of private grounds bordered by woodland. The present building sits on the site of the original 16th-century house, and once hosted the novelist Elizabeth Gaskell and the poet John Betjeman, who is reputed to have written three of his poems here. We visited the property and loved the stunning views of the Vale of Evesham and the surrounding Cotswolds countryside.

The ancient market town of Winchcombe, with its quaint shops, pubs and tea rooms, is 10 minutes' drive away. The ruins of 13th-century Hailes Abbey, where you can follow an audio tour or visit the museum, are within a 15-minute drive. You can also visit Tewkesbury -- a 20-minute drive away -- to see the medieval buildings and narrow alleyways that surround the Benedictine abbey.

Cheltenham, Stratford-upon-Avon and Batsford Arboretum, a 56-acre botanical garden with one of the largest collections of trees and shrubs in England, are around 30 minutes' drive away. Gloucester, with its 11th-century cathedral, is 35 minutes' drive from the hotel.

Dinner and Sunday lunch are served in The Cedar Tree Restaurant, which has an extensive wine list. Afternoon tea, coffee and bar snacks are available in The Olive Lounge, and drinks are served in The Library Bar and Lounge.

Bedrooms vary in size and character but all have views of the gardens or the Vale of Evesham. Dogs are welcome, but not in the public rooms (fees apply; see policies for details).

The location was excellent with beautiful gardens. Food was very good and staff were friendly and professional, especially in the dining room.
Other Comments
Unfortunately the first room (room 2) we were shown to was not acceptable. The window was frosted glass, to hide the bin storage. We asked to have our room changed and were told that we would have to upgrade at a cost of £10 per night. After this initial disappointment our stay was very enjoyable. We hope that Travelzoo will investigate the discrepancy between what they booked for us (a room with a view of the surrouning grounds) and what we were given.

Spacious gardens, sense of grandeur about a large and old property, well appointed bedrooms, and a great location for visiting places of interest including, in our case, Hidcote National Trust Gardens.
Other Comments
This is not a complaint, but simply an observation. The staff were all very friendly, but we felt that some had been somewhat let down by their managers in terms of appropriate training. For example, trays of dirty glasses/empty bottles/cans were simply left standing on tables adjacent to those at which guests were dining, and again on top of a bar area in otherwise smart dining room and lounge areas. A more professional management example and control over issues such as this would greatly enhance the feeling that this was an aspiring quality venue, which is how it is obviously trying to present itself.

Main meals were good but breakfast used tinned mushrooms and ran out of croissants well before end of time closed.

All aspects brilliant food, staff & room.
Other Comments
It was beautiful weather but the outside patio areas and tables were not clean with cigarette ends etc all over the floor. It was probably because of a wedding the day before but in only detracted slightly from our visit.
