The Quayside Hotel was formerly a group of six fishermen's cottages dating back to the 18th century, overlooking Brixham Harbour and Torbay. It is an ideal base for exploring South Devon, known as the English Riviera, "so-called for its mild climate, long sandy beaches, and prevalence of palm trees", says the World Travel Guide.

Nearby are the picturesque naval town of Dartmouth, the seaside resort town of Torbay and Agatha Christie's riverside holiday home (Greenway). You'll be staying a 3-minute walk from Brixham town centre – described by The Guardian as "beautiful all year round" and home to "Devon's finest seafood".

Make sure you visit one of the many art galleries, the Golden Hind replica of explorer Sir Francis Drake's ship, and Berry Head nature reserve, which connects visitors to the Coast Path and some 22 miles of trails. Goodrington Sands Beach, Paignton Beach and Paignton Zoo are all within a 15-minute drive away.

Back at the hotel, the AA-Rosette Quayside Restaurant showcases fresh local produce including fish caught in the harbour -- red mullet, sea bass, pollock and wild salmon, as well as Elberry Cove mussels and River Dart oysters have all been on the menu. Afterwards, have a nightcap in the local favourite Ernie Lister Pub, which has regular live entertainment.

The hotel's bedrooms are all uniquely decorated with a seaside theme and work from Brixham artists and photographers. Upgrade to a Luxury Sea View Double Room, for more of those views -- you can choose between balconies or a bay window seat and a 4-poster or a king-size bed.

The position of the hotel was ideal although we did have to book a sea view at an extra cost of £20 per night costing an extra cost of £60 to get a double room.

Size of room was really small and the bathroom even smaller (measured 60" x 48") Hotel seemed highly charged for redemption of voucher for evening meal on first night but following dining experience poor. Unfortunately, following the last evening we were ill Travelling home I became sick and had to stop to vomit a number of times and my husband suffered the same the day after. Another couple we were with also suffered the same all through the last night and could not eat breakfast on the departure day.

The Quayside is a typical, quintessentially English seaside hotel with a rabbit warren of stairs to make it even more interesting. The receptionist was very courteous and understanding of my predicament (I currently have a problem with my knee) so it was arranged that we moved from the top floor to a lower floor. Our only issue was that the bedrooms could really do with some air conditioning......a Friday night in Brixham proved to be rather rowdy and impossible to sleep with your window open! We would recommend this hotel, but wouldn't return purely because we didn't feel Brixham lived up to our expectations of 'The English Riviera'!!

Our bedroom was good but the shower itself could do with being upgraded. The shower room was small but space was very limited and you have made it acceptable.
