Overview

The second you enter the Mendocino Hotel's mahogany-filled lobby -- complete with a crackling fireplace, stained glass windows and a number of antiques -- you are transported to a different era. The building was constructed in 1878 and dates back to a time when Mendocino was a happening port for the logging trade. The hotel is right by the ocean, a half-mile from State Route 1 and a mile from Mendocino Headlands State Park and Mendocino Bay.

The European rooms (this room type is not offered in our deal) are quite small and have an in-room vanity and sink and shared restrooms across the hall. The garden suites are much more spacious. Many of these rooms also have a foldout sofa, fireplace and porch. These rooms were renovated back in 2006 and feature views of the lush greenery outside. Wi-Fi is complimentary in the bedrooms.

There are three restaurants on property to choose from, whether you feel like something more casual (Garden Room or Lobby Bar) or a finer dining experience (Mendocino Hotel Restaurant). The hotel is right in town too, so there are plenty of dining options and shops within walking distance.

From the press:
  • "It's easy to see why artists were -- and still are -- attracted to this idyllic community, a cluster of New England-style captains' homes and stores on headlands overlooking the ocean" -- Frommer's

Location was fabulous but really need to put money into renovations.

It was obvious that the rooms had not been kept up. Upholstered chairs were dirty, faucets not working very well. The hotel was far from full but the fireplace in our room wasn't working which makes you wonder how may rooms had non working fireplaces.

Only issue was that we did not receive maid service during our stay.

This hotel had a hay-day. and it has passed. However, it's the kind of place you want to support because it's quaint.

The gardens need a major clean up and lots more daily attention. Our room although clean presented itself as tired and worn out.

It is a casual, old fashioned Victorian Inn. Very clean, staff are incredibly service oriented.

Location, deck.

Hotel has a lot going for it - great location, fabulous deck where one can enjoy the view of the water, variety of restaurants. It just needs updating. We booked 3 nights in the Travelzoo special, which was a standard room. It was so tiny we could only stand it for one night. They're upgrade charge of $40/Night was reasonable so we changed to a much larger room but it was desperately in need of updating. Musty smell, only air flow was from the ground floor window, very old fixtures and worn furnishings. They just need to spend some money on the rooms but I do suspect that's why their prices are low.
