Why We Love This Hotel

  • The hotel is in the village of Grasmere and is named after its most famous former resident, poet William Wordsworth
  • Wordsworth fans can see three of his former homes: Dove Cottage and Allan Bank in Grasmere, and Rydal Mount, which is less than 10 minutes' drive away
  • Lake Windermere is a 20-minute drive from the hotel
  • Guests can use the indoor pool, Jacuzzi and sauna
  • Grasmere's famous Gingerbread Shop is next door to the hotel

Overview

The Wordsworth Hotel & Spa was built in 1870 and is in the centre of Grasmere, which Lonely Planet calls "one of the prettiest of the Lakeland hamlets". One of Grasmere's main draws is its links to poet William Wordsworth -- he lived in Dove Cottage between 1799 and 1808, and at Allan Bank from 1808 to 1810. Dove Cottage and The Wordsworth Museum are closed until spring, 2020, but Allan Bank, which is a National Trust property, is open Friday-Sunday.

The hotel, which holds four AA Silver Stars, is praised by Britain's Finest as "the best hotel in the village of Grasmere". It is next to the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop -- the former cottage of Victorian cook Sarah Nelson, who created the recipe that is still used today.

The Signature Restaurant holds an AA Rosette and is prasied for its "creative country-house cooking" by The AA Restaurant Guide 2020. There's an extensive wine list and an emphasis on local beers. Afternoon tea is available daily from 12-5pm in the conservatory or lounge, or on the terrace in good weather.

Guests can use the W Organic Spa, which has an indoor pool, a Jacuzzi and a sauna. Spa treatments are also available (additional charges apply).

Waterhead Pier on Lake Windermere is around 15 minutes' drive from the hotel; the pier is the starting point for several scenic boat tours.

Keswick, a town "encircled by cloud-capped fells and nestled alongside the idyllic, island-studded lake of Derwentwater" (Lonely Planet), is less than 30 minutes' drive from the hotel.

The location, the atmosphere in the hotel and the value for money deal!

The hotel was lovely although it could do with a bit of an update in parts e.g. carpets.

Friendly efficient staff. Meals in the restaurant extremely good and beautifully presented.

Cream tea was included on arrival. Unfortunately this was very disappointing, as the scones were very hard and over baked. Not up to their usual standard. We have stayed at the Wordsworth Hotel before and enjoyed very nice cream teas in the past.

We were disappointed on arrival to find most of the hotel covered in scaffolding. Our supposed garden village view room was masques in building work. When we arrived the banging and noise was very loud. It was our anniversary and we weren’t able to open the blinds in our room or bathroom as there were builders outside our 2nd floor window. However being optimistic people we looked on the positives and the room was spacious, clean and nice and the staff and restaurant service were excellent. I have always wanted to stay here because of its namesake but have to say the initial reaction with the building work and not being notified prior did upset me as we were so looking forward to staying. We were also told that we couldn’t eat in The Signature Restaurant as there was a conference on and they took priority. However the alternative lounge was also nice and service very good. All in all we had a lovely time despite the builders and would stay here in the future but think they should reduce their rates as the hotel is in need of an update.

The food was amazing

The bedroom was dated with a small bed (slight foisty smell) however the bathroom was modern and seemed brand new. The pool was good with a sauna and hot tub. Pool walls could do with a deep clean and the pool could do with a set time where children can use it so adults can relax.

We had a wonderful overnight stay at the Wordsworth Hotel. All the staff were very nice and nothing was too much trouble for them. We had a lovely afternoon tea in the conservatory despite arriving late. The room was very comfortable with a large well appointed bathroom with complimentary toiletries. The only slight niggle was the scaffolding outside the windows which we were told would be gone by the time of our stay was still up hindering the view of the village and was a little difficult the next day as the workmen were there. We had our evening meal included in our package and the food was amazing. We are vegetarian but this was no problem and we absolutely loved our options and the wine was delicious. So we felt very spoilt. We both enjoyed our birthday treat and would love to return. Thank you to everyone.

Thank you for letting me know I had left my reading glasses as I would have been lost without them. We were able to call back to pick them up before leaving, so much appreciated.
