Modelled on an 18th-century Portuguese palace, the 5-star Conrad Algarve features Moorish details and original artwork. There’s nothing old-fashioned about the facilities, however -- this hotel is as modern as they come.
Set in the exclusive Quinta do Lago resort, it’s just 35 minutes’ drive from Ria Formosa reserve, a birdwatcher’s paradise. The area caters well to golfers, who can enjoy courses such as Laranjal (4.6km away) -- the hotel has its own golf concierge. For beach-lovers, there’s a regular shuttle bus (a charge applies for use of the beach), and a dedicated concierge service can book you on a wine-tasting tour in a nearby vineyard.
But (golfing aside) will you want to leave the hotel? Dining options include Mediterranean cuisine at Gusto, where chef Heinz Beck (best-known for three-Michelin-starred La Pergola in Rome) leads the kitchen. Louro serves modern Portuguese food, while Dado is a South American-inspired poolside restaurant and bar. A majestic spa -- which “guarantees you will leave looking younger, brighter and lighter” (The Daily Telegraph) -- has outdoor cabanas, a sauna, infinity pool and cold plunge pool, as well as a VIP couple’s spa suite. Families are welcome, and a Kid’s Club organises daily activities for children.
The 154 airy rooms all have private balconies, free WiFi and flat-screen TVs, as well as Nespresso machines and MP3 sound systems. For ultimate luxury, there’s the Roof Garden Suite, with its own plunge pool in the lounge and direct access to the spa.
