Formerly a printing factory, the stylish 4-star boutique CenterHotel ThingHolt (designed by Icelandic-born architect Gulla Jonsdottir), sits at the heart of Reykjavik, close to both the best shopping and the National Theatre.
Iceland’s capital is compact and easy to explore on foot but, even so, this is a great location. You’re less than a minute from Reykjavik’s main shopping street, Laugavegur, while Iceland’s largest church, Hallgrimskirkja, is less than a 10-minute walk from the hotel. (The view from the top takes in the whole city.) If you have time, you’ll want to escape the city with a visit to the Blue Lagoon Geothermic spa, a 45-minute drive away.
Part of the charm of a new city is looking for places to eat, but the hotel holds its own with a fine-dining restaurant that serves a selection of traditional and contemporary Icelandic dishes. Look for lobster soup, wild reindeer carpaccio and pan-fried Nordic langoustine tails, or just chill out in the bar. The hotel has also has a stylish spa (extra charges apply) with a sauna, a hot tub and a gym.
Rooms are decorated in cool, white, Icelandic style -- all have air-conditioning, free WiFi and minibars. Deluxe Rooms have either a white leather sofa or a bathtub in the room -- choose according to your preferred method of relaxation, or upgrade to a Junior Suite for both.
