Brooks Hotel Edinburgh is housed in a 19th-century Gothic stone building in the buzzing West End of Edinburgh. It's "littered with sleek boutiquey touches", according to The Sunday Times, including faded tan leather armchairs, retro side tables, black chandeliers and stag antlers.

Edinburgh Castle is one mile from the hotel, while the Old Town, where you'll find the Royal Mile, historic Grassmarket and a labyrinth of cobbled streets, narrow alleys and steep staircases, is a 10-minute walk away. Princes Street, Edinburgh's main shopping road, is even closer -- a 5-minute walk from the hotel.

The hotel has a pretty courtyard as well as an honesty bar stocked with local whiskies. The hotel has a log fire in its lounge, which is ideal for a cosy afternoon tea. Breakfast, which includes award-winning haggis from a local butcher, is served in the stylish dining room.

Compact Doubles are snug, while Standard Double Rooms are larger and feature designer wallpaper, and a blend of modern and vintage furniture collected from Edinburgh's independent shops. The bathrooms are decorated with Victorian crackle glaze tiles and have de-misting mirrors and an eco shower. Rooms also offer free Wi-Fi, Hungarian goosedown duvets, an iPod docking station and a flat-screen TV. There are three family rooms that each sleep up to four people.

The location and the staff

Disappointing having two single beds put together instead of providing a double bed and bathroom which was very tiny and compact. The afternoon tea was a simple tea with 2 egg sandwiches, 2 salmon & 2 ham, a brownie and a lemon slice. The Prosecco was semi sparkling cheap stuff and a let down.

The hotel is a good walk from the city centre but is well served by buses - a day ticket costs £4 (£2.50 with a train ticket)

Comfortable huge bed , warm rooms, friendly helpful staff , lovely touches the afternoon tea and the presseco. Wide choice for breakfast can recommend the yoghurt pot with honey and granola and the smoked salmon with scrambled eggs.

Location was a little out of the central area, but if enjoy walking it was fine. Buses ran past the end of the street, convenient if it was raining. Food was nice although the breakfast buffet table became short during the last hour of service. Hot breakfast was cooked to order so required a wait which was rather long when it got busy, plus the 2 boiled eggs we ordered then arrived very raw, but they happily replaced them. Our afternoon tea was very nice & the lounge setting with a fire was very comfortable. The bedroom was also comfortable but had no heat on at all when we arrived & we were unable to turn on the radiator or towel rail in the bathroom. It seems these were programmed & locked, but they had activated them and the room was warm on our return. We only had one bath towel & asked for another & 2 hand towels, housekeeping seemed rather reticent to provide these, one more bath towel arrived & then we asked again for the hand towels, which did then arrive. The following day we were back to 2 bath towels. Overall as we had a voucher for this hotel we felt we did get a good deal and would consider staying there again if a similar deal was available.
