The BEST WESTERN Tiverton Hotel in Devon has a flower-covered façade, and is set in two acres of gardens alongside the River Lowman.
It's a 15-minute walk from the centre of Tiverton, which has a 12th-century castle and the Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life, which won a Bronze Award at the Visit Devon Tourism Awards 2015 in the Small Attraction of The Year category. The museum tells you about the history of local trades and how the people of Devon lived.
Walkers can head to either Dartmoor or Exmoor national parks, which are less than 45 minutes' drive away. Alternatively, visit Tiverton Canal Co, a 10-minute walk from the hotel, and walk the 11-mile canal path or take a trip on a horse-drawn barge (from April to October). The National Trust's Knightshayes, a Gothic manor designed by William Burges, who was fascinated by medieval England and designed Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch, is four miles away.
The Gallery Restaurant's kitchen uses West Country produce where possible (look for local lamb and cheeses), and there's a 2-course carvery lunch on Sundays. There's also a bar for lighter bites and local ales.
Bedrooms are traditional in style, with patterned carpets and heavy bedspreads. Many are on the ground floor, providing step-free access, and all have free Wi-Fi. Pets are welcome (at £10 extra per night), but aren't allowed in dining areas and must be supervised at all times.
