Set on London's South Bank, The Mad Hatter Hotel is a Fuller's pub with friendly staff and 30 ensuite bedrooms, just off Blackfriars Bridge. The property is on the site of an old hat factory and the décor has a restrained Alice in Wonderland theme, with framed pictures of the Mad Hatter and old-fashioned prints of gentlemen in hats.
It is one block from the River Thames in Southwark, a historic area of London that dates back to the Roman era and was mentioned in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. This is where you'll find The Shard (the tallest building in the UK), The Clink Prison Museum and Borough Market -- "a foodie’s paradise" (Time Out). The hotel is a short walk from the Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe, a reconstruction of the original Elizabethan theatre. It is a 15 minutes on foot from the Southbank, where you'll find the Royal Festival Hall, the National Theatre, the BFI's Southbank cinema, and a number of bars and restaurants. A 15-minute walk across the Millennium Bridge leads to The City of London and St Paul's Cathedral. Southwark Underground station, on the Jubilee line, is five minutes on foot from the hotel.
There's a traditional pub with leather-topped stools, a polished-wood bar and cosy pews along one wall. It serves pies, Ploughman's lunches, Fuller's ales and 19 different malt whiskies, and you can watch live football on TV or borrow a board game. Guests can have breakfast here or pick up a bap filled with bacon, sausage or egg for a meal on the go.
Bedrooms are a good size for central London and offer free Wi-Fi. Superior Rooms look similar, but have larger beds. There is very little noise, despite the central location, and rooms at the back are even quieter. The hotel has a small lift for access to upper floors.
