Opened in the summer of 2013, Hlemmur Square offers ground-breaking budget lodgings, just around the corner from Reykjavik's main shopping area. The hotel shares its facilities with a hostel, but it doesn't feel like a backpacker hangout. It's a stylish place with minimalist design, vintage furniture and bright pops of colour. The lobby is a buzzy spot in which to lounge, and is furnished with battered leather sofas and antiques.
The location is very central, right on Laugavegur Street, the city's shopping and nightlife hub. The area is still a bit rough around the edges, but it's very much up and coming. It is also very convenient for sightseeing, three blocks from the waterfront and a half-hour walk from the cathedral and the Saga Museum. The Icelandic Phallological Museum, "Iceland's most off-beat museum", according to Rough Guides, is just across the street.
Guests can kick back at the hotel's bar, where cocktails and 60 different varieties of craft beer are served until 11pm. The daily happy hour serves discounted draught beers and house wine from 4-8pm. A breakfast buffet is available until 11am each morning, and guests have use of the kitchen as well. There's a private cinema on site.
The 18 hotel-quality bedrooms are on the fifth floor, away from the hostel dorms. Oak parquet floors and king-size beds provide a luxurious touch, and black and white photos of Old Reykjavik decorate the walls. There are great city views and many rooms have balconies. Wi-Fi is free, as are local phone calls.
