Overview

The 4-star Hallmark Hotel The Welcombe is set in 157 acres of Italian-style landscaped gardens on the outskirts of Stratford-upon-Avon. The grade II-listed Jacobean-style hotel, which was originally built in 1886, features an oak-panelled lounge with a large fireplace, and some of the rooms feature 4-poster beds.

The property is around 10 minutes' drive from Stratford-upon-Avon, a historic market town and the famed birthplace of William Shakespeare. The town is home to The Royal Shakespeare Theatre, the Swan Theatre and the scenic River Avon.

Warwick Castle is less than 15 minutes' drive away, and Anne Hathaway's Cottage -- a picturesque timbered farmhouse that was the childhood home of Shakespeare's wife -- is in the nearby village of Shottery, about a mile west of Stratford-upon-Avon.

The edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is around 20 minutes' drive from the hotel, while Birmingham city centre is around 45 minutes' drive away.

The hotel's AA-Rosette-awarded restaurant has views of the gardens where, weather permitting, guests can dine al fresco on the hotel's terrace. As well as an 18-hole golf course, facilities include a spa with an indoor swimming pool, a health club with a gym, and a range of health and beauty treatments (extra charges apply).

Superior and Executive Rooms are more spacious than Classic Rooms. Wi-Fi is free.

Wonderful setting. Great spa facilities. Good breakfast
Other Comments
My only slight criticism would be to have a better fruit selection at breakfast and the air conditioning fan is a little noisy in the room

1. Only 3 very small containers of Semi Skimmed milk. Not enough for 2 people. 2. Only 2 very small containers of shampoo. 3. No lift available. 4. Table arrangement for a couple in the Dining room was such that only one person could look out at the garden. 5. No Salt & Pepper in the pots on the Dining table! 6. No Dressing Gowns in bedroom. You had to pay extra for this! 7. No identification between Shampoo /Shower Gel in Changing room of Spa. 8. Abrupt attitude of Staff in Spa. Not Customer orientated at all. 9. Some of the locks broken on the doors to the lockers in Spa Changing room.

Good reception on arrival, view from room was lovely Customer service in the bar was patchy - We were left to open our own prosecco which wasn't a problem but unexpected. Waiters perhaps need a bit more training but were perfectly pleasant all the same

the settling of the bill in the restaurant was not made clear to me on requesting the bill. at the table, our bill came to 85.00. less the 35.00 per head allowance- I paid an additional 15.00 to settle the bill -plus 15.00 tip, at the table. On checking out I was represented with the additions at the table, 15.00. I did not challenge the bill as I couldn't be bothered over 15.00. the sirloin steak in the restaurant at 26.00 was a joke and they need to get a handle on that one. the pool was out of use on Saturday afternoon until Sunday morning. It was a shame really because of the above, otherwise, it would have been very good. thanks

Generally, we enjoyed our stay at The Welcombe. Our first visit was 44years ago on our honeymoon, it was grander then and less dusty! Lovely surroundings. Our room was ok but the hotel could do with a bit of refurbishment. The evening meal was very good. Little things were disappointing such as, at breakfast the plates were cold so the food went cold very quickly.

Receptionist and other staff were very good. The bed very comfortable. We had breakfast in the room and the full English portions were smaller than we’ve received in other hotels.
Other Comments
The windows in the bedroom opened but would not stay open due to broken cords. The toilet had a very poor flush. Windows needed cleaning & blinds required attention.

The Spa except staff. Historic building and view across the rear grounds / golf course.
Other Comments
Rooms clean and tv did have some paid channels. Our room was in the basement of one wing but limited access meant you had to go up 2 flight of stairs and long walk. Buffet breakfast ok. Reception staff in Spa unwelcoming. Limited access for walking around extensive grounds due to private golf course.
