Liverpool's iconic Neo-Baroque Royal Insurance Building -- a famous landmark that "has been returned to its former glory", according to The Guardian -- is now the home of the Aloft Liverpool hotel. A sympathetic refurbishment means the Grade II-listed building has retained many of its original features, including the stained-glass windows, the wood panelling, the stucco ceilings, the circular stairwell and the famous golden dome.
Liverpool ONE -- the city's main shopping area -- is a 4-minute walk away, and The Beatles Story museum is a 15-minute walk from the hotel. The Echo Arena and the Liverpool Philharmonic are also near -- they can be reached on foot within around 20 minutes.
The hotel's NYL Restaurant & Bar serves up New York-style food, with a menu created by 2014 Northern Ireland Chef of the Year and AA-Rosette-awarded executive head chef Rob Scott. Mains include a range of fish, steak and pasta dishes, with inventive starters and sides such as fennel gazpacho, Brooklyn ale-battered onion rings and shoestring fries. Drinks include a range of speciality gins and gin-inspired cocktails. There is also the W XYZ Bar, which serves cocktails and features monthly live-music performances.
Guests can use the hotel's Re:charge fitness centre, which has exercise bikes, treadmills and elliptical machines. The fitness centre is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The hotel also features a Re:Mix Lounge, a lobby with a pool table, and a 24-hour grab-and-go self-service snack station, called Re:fuel by Aloft.
Each of the hotel's 116 loft-style Aloft or Savvy rooms comes with a comfortable platform bed, 42-inch flat-screen TV, Bliss Spa® products and a large walk-in shower. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
