Why We Love This Hotel

  • The hotel is in an enviable central location close to Bath Abbey, The Roman Baths and Thermae Bath Spa
  • There's quirky décor and modern art displayed throughout the property
  • The restaurant is a joint venture between famous chefs Pierre Koffmann and Marco Pierre White
  • The Daily Telegraph praises the "chatty, personable and professional" staff

"Britain's littered with beautiful cities, but precious few compare to Bath," says Lonely Planet, thanks to "some of the nation's grandest Georgian architecture" and "one of the world's best-preserved Roman bathhouses". The Abbey Hotel is in the centre of the city, close to the Roman Baths, Thermae Bath Spa, Bath Abbey and a whole host of shops, bars and restaurants.

The Abbey's new brasserie-style restaurant, Koffmann & Mr White's, is a joint venture between famous chefs Pierre Koffmann and Marco Pierre White. Menus feature French classics and traditional English fare. The restaurant offers "accomplished" food and "excellent" service, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Breakfast gets the same attention to detail, with fresh smoothies, croissants, artisan bread and cooked treats.

After a day of getting acquainted with the city's lovely architecture or walking in the surrounding Cotswolds countryside, you can relax in the ArtBar & Lounge, which offers an extensive cocktail list, a vast array of gins and a tempting afternoon tea with homemade cakes, scones and biscuits.

Originally three Georgian townhouses, the hotel has 62 bright, art-filled rooms with luxury toiletries and free Wi-Fi. Front-facing rooms offer great views over the city.

The dinner was very good. I would eat there but not stay again!

The hotel was undergoing refurbishment. It is a pity we weren’t told about this. We I commented on this, I received a very defensive response: “it’s better than staying at a scruffy hotel”. Not very professional. Whilst the dinner was excellent, breakfast was a bit disappointing, as was the service that morning.

Location excellent

We were not warned that major improvement works were going on in the hotel which caused some inconvenience. The bar was in progress of being refurbished and there were workmen all over the place. Reception moved around a lot and it was sometimes difficult to find staff. Despite having booked our dinner for the second night the hotel did not seem to know about this but fitted us in. Worse, they wanted to charge me for it when it was included in the package. Whilst I thought the hotel OK, staffing was erratic and there were too many stairs and corridors leading to the bedrooms. Parking at Southgate CP was excellent with ticketless entry and exit and it felt secure.

The service at breakfast was dreadful the tea and coffee were both served cold the coffee had coffee flakes floating around in it which was replaced the breakfast was very good the waitress asked us several times for our cooked order before we had chance to have fruit and cereals and when we finally ordered had disappeared completely the dinner and service in the evening was amazing we were not informed that building works and renovations were being carried out during our stay which spoilt the experience
