Why We Love This Hotel

  • A "jaunty, neo-Regency style pervades the hotel", which occupies seven interconnecting Grade I-listed Georgian townhouses on Queen Square, which is "one of Bath's most notable architectural set pieces", according to The Daily Telegraph
  • Many of the city's top sights, including Bath Abbey, the Roman Baths, Thermae Bath Spa and the Royal Crescent, are less than 10 minutes' walk from the hotel
  • The hotel's Brasserie Blanc restaurant features "diligent and friendly" service and a menu of French classics created by Raymond Blanc
  • Guestrooms come with fine Egyptian cotton sheets on beds, fluffy bathrobes and luxury toiletries

Overview

Situated on Queen Square in the centre of Bath, the Francis Hotel Bath - MGallery by Sofitel occupies a row of seven interconnecting Georgian townhouses. The hotel's design nods to the buildings' history, with richly coloured wallpapers, a mahogany grandfather clock in reception and plaques that give information about the houses' first owners. Original black-and-white photos and 12 hand-drawn illustrations of life in the 1800s tell the story of the buildings.

Queen Square has an enclosed garden, with an obelisk in the centre that was erected in 1738 for the Prince of Wales. It's in the city centre, less than 10 minutes' walk from Bath Abbey, the Roman Baths and Thermae Bath Spa. Bath Spa railway station is less than 15 minutes' walk.

The Circus and the Royal Crescent are less than 10 minutes away on foot. These streets of Palladian-style townhouses are the grandest in the city. Head to No.1 Royal Crescent to learn about life in Bath during the 18th century. Literature buffs can visit the Jane Austen Centre (five minutes' walk from the hotel) to learn about the author's life and times in Bath.

Afternoon tea can be taken in Emily's Tea Room, which features velvet Chesterfield sofas and wingback chairs. Meals, including breakfast, are served in Brasserie Blanc, which has a menu designed by Michelin-starred chef Raymond Blanc featuring a range of classic French dishes. The bar offers more informal food, including sandwiches and salads made with locally sourced ingredients.

Classic Rooms come with Egyptian cotton sheets, fluffy bathrobes, luxury toiletries, Wi-Fi, mineral water, and tea- and coffee-making facilities.

The hotel is lovely , shame they franchise out the restaurant since we last went , the standard of food has dropped dramatically, the hotel is still nice , wouldn’t recommend the restaurant, the quality of food is poor & prices high, you can get good food in nice restaurant for what they charge , also we paid to park our car in the hotel car park , thinking it would be safe secure parking , unfortunately our car wash broken into over night , & many items taken , & damage to the car , hotel manager was helpful & police were called , unfortunately other people car was also broken into , so the hotel car park isn’t as secure as would think , considering their £17.50 per night fee , We would return the Francis hotel tho as we have been going there for 15 years ,

The only problem was the heating in our room kept going off. Staff were brilliant and provided a free standing heater while they offered us another room and fixed the heating. Food in the restaurant was very good and value for money

My wife and I were very impressed with the hotel and the staff. We had arranged to stay for a Sunday night only and initially thought we would try one of the local restaurants but as the weather wasn't the best we chose to use the hotel restaurant- it was terrific ! We both chose the duck which was absolutely delicious and to follow we had the sticky toffee pudding which was equally lovely. Two courses for £20 and a bottle of very decent Rose' for less than £20. Im not sure if this deal only applies to a Sunday but that's what I call value for money. The room was very nice and overlooked the front of the hotel and on to a square which I am sure would be really nice in the Spring or Summer. The beds were comfy, the walk in shower very effective and the room was clean. All the staff we came across were friendly and efficient. The buffet breakfast had a more than adequate choice. We managed to use the car park at the rear of the hotel which was £17.50 per night which seems quite expensive but appears to be of a similar cost to the local public car parks. We hope to return in the Spring so there is no better recommendation
