Undoubtedly "Belfast's most famous hotel" (Lonely Planet), The 3-star Europa Hotel is a favourite with diplomats and visiting celebrities alike, counting the likes of Hillary Clinton, Victoria Beckham and Elvis Costello among its prior guests. The monumental building -- which is faced with glass and neoclassical columns and dates back to the 70s -- has survived remarkably intact despite the city's turbulent history.
The hotel occupies a very central position opposite the city’s Grand Opera House and around the corner from the legendary Crown Liquor Saloon. It's a 12-minute walk to the Victoria Street Shopping Centre and 19 minutes' stroll from the Ulster Museum, with its wide and varied collection of art and natural history and botanical gardens nearby. A little further away lies the Titanic Belfast, where you can learn about its passengers and visit the dry dock where the ship was built. Cave Hill Country Park, a 16-minute drive north of the city, is also worth a visit for its stupendous views over the city.
The iconic Piano Bar on the first floor is a "sumptuous haven of mahogany, leather and candlelight", according to The Daily Telegraph. It's open for afternoon tea, bar snacks and cocktails, and there's live piano music from 2-5pm on Saturday afternoons and from 7-10pm on Friday and Saturday nights. The Causerie bistro serves classic fare from local producers, such as steaks and fish and chips, and includes special children's menus (along with a children's panto menu). Breakfast is a locally sourced affair too, with Crawford's granola from County Down, yoghurt from the Clandeboye Estate and a dash of Bushmills Whiskey in the White's oat porridge from Tandragee (Armagh), and of course Ireland’s famous Bewley’s Coffee.
The understated bedrooms are traditional in style. Classic rooms are a little tight on space and some don’t have much of a view, while Executive rooms are larger and snazzier, and overlook the Grand Opera House of the Black Mountains to the rear of the hotel. The rubber ducks in the bathrooms are a fun touch, and guests are free to take them away.
