Why We Love It

  • Part of the hotel's main building is a former coaching inn dating from the 17th century
  • Spa facilities include an outside hot tub, a Nordic sauna, an ice fountain and a eucalyptus steam room (spa access must be pre-booked; additional fees apply)
  • Harrogate, Leeds and York are all around 30 minutes' drive away

The Bridge Hotel & Spa is in the hamlet of Walshford in North Yorkshire. The hotel is said to stand exactly halfway between London and Edinburgh, so it's not surprising that there is a 17th-century coaching inn at the core of the hotel building. Today, the property is five minutes' drive from the A1(M) and is "well-connected" (The AA) for day trips.

The hotel is less than 10 minutes' drive from the market town of Wetherby, home to Wetherby Racecourse, which hosts racedays from October to July. Bramham Park -- a sprawling wooded estate with an 18th-century manor -- is a 15-minute drive away.

You can also drive 15 minutes to Knaresborough and see Mother Shipton's Cave or the ruined 14th-century castle, or venture 30 minutes by car to spend the day at Newby Hall, Fountains Abbey or Lightwater Valley theme park. The nightlife of Leeds, the spa town of Harrogate and historic York -- "the North's most compelling city", according to Rough Guides -- are also around 30 minutes' drive from the hotel. The North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales national parks are 40 minutes' drive away.

The hotel boasts a spa with an outdoor hot tub, two saunas, an ice fountain and a steam room (spa access is £15 per person for three hours and must be pre-booked). The cosy bar is adorned with oak panelling dating back 250 years, and the restaurant serves classic British dishes. Wi-Fi is free.

Comfortable room, quiet and with a good bathroom. Friendly staff. Big car park.
Other Comments
Opening a window or going outside meant a stink of manure from surrounding land. Food is simple, kept-warm fare. Bar staff could not tackle anything more complicated than a gin and tonic.

We were a little disappointed in double bedded room we were initially allocated as it did not come up to standard that was advertised through TravelZoo. After travelling over 3 hours to get to destination we were given a room that was incredibly small for a double and it was obvious that previous occupants had been guiding themselves, probably through the night on way to the bathroom, as there were marks all over the walls on both sides of the bed as the floorspace and gaps were so narrow. We had booked this on the understanding that we would receive a room as shown on the advert (worked out the advertised rooms are on the first floor and we were on ground floor and hasten to add on way to this room had to walk through a soggy carpet passed one of the hotels public toilets which obviously had a massive leak!). We rather think the hotel is taking advantage of TravelZoo and are instead allocating people to extremely smaller, more basic and shabbier rooms that are desperately in need of refreshment!! We did get upgraded to a much better room after discussion with reception but had to wait over 1 hour before they could re-allocate and even though this room was good the plumbing needed a lot to be desired as when using the shower over the bath in this room by the time finished the water in the bath was half way up legs confirming a massive problem draining away - not very hygienic to say the least (we did point this out to Reception on leaving). Evening meal was very good but breakfast was not as nice. Breakfast in this hotel is buffet style and served from 7am-10am and as we did not arrive until 9.40am for this most things had been out for quite a while and were not as fresh as they would have been earlier on but this defeats the whole object of the breakfast timescale as whatever time a guest arrives for this meal, everyone should have the similar expectancy of a good all round breakfast? We also found that part of the continental breakfast had all gone and not been replaced, again if they state breakfast between certain times should it not be the same for those that attend nearer, in this instance, 10am as those that attended just from 7am onwards?
