Overview
Dating back to the 16th century, Thornbury Castle has a fascinating history. It was claimed by the Crown after its owner (the Duke of Buckingham) was beheaded for treason, and King Henry VIII stayed here with Anne Boleyn in 1535. It's now a boutique bolthole, but still "the hallways positively clank with suits of armour and wrought-iron candelabras", according to The Daily Telegraph.
You'll be staying on the edge of the Cotswolds, in the historic Roman town of Thornbury, which was mentioned in the Domesday Book. There is a heritage trail in town, and nearby Westonbirt Arboretum is worth a visit. Gloucester, Bristol, Bath and Cheltenham are all less than an hour's drive.
The cosy hotel restaurant specialises in traditional fine dining. The herbs and vegetables come from the on-site walled gardens, and there's a butterscotch pudding and highly regarded cheese trolley for dessert. Afternoon tea is served daily and can be enjoyed by the fireside in the winter or out in the gardens during warmer months.
The cellar is well stocked and was recognised with an award from Wine Spectator in 2013 -- try the Müller-Thurgau white wine, which is harvested from the hotel's own 500-year-old vine.
Families with older kids are well looked after here. There are 14 acres of grounds to explore, and traditional country pursuits such as archery and croquet are available.
Staff are happy to arrange early suppers and childcare for younger guests (aged 10 and up). There's no spa on site, but in-room treatments can be arranged on request (charges apply).
Many of the rooms have period features, such as 4-poster beds, exposed stone walls (north wing), tapestries and intricately moulded ceilings. Well-behaved pets are welcome (charges apply).
