"The location was great. We had never been to that part of Portland before and it was fun. We walked on the trail behind the Hotel both mornings we were there. Plus it is easy to get downtown. I especially liked your promotion rate."

Overview

Nestled in a surprisingly rural setting only 10 minutes’ drive south of downtown Portland, River’s Edge Hotel & Spa is a modern riverside retreat. It is positioned on the fringes of the trendy South Waterfront District (Portland’s newest neighborhood) and is a short walk from the Aerial Tram (15 minutes’ by foot through Elizabeth Caruthers Park) and Butterfly Park (30 minutes down the river). Downtown is not really walkable, but the hotel will soon be offering free one-way transfers into the city center -- just ask at reception when you check-in.

The biggest highlight is the full-service spa. It’s a “lavish two-story affair”, according to Sunset magazine, and opening hours run from 5:30am-9pm. There’s also a spacious, fully equipped 24-hour fitness center. Borrow one of the hotel’s free bikes and explore the Willamette Greenway Trail or head for the hills in neighboring Marquam Nature Park, where there are 40 miles of jogging trails and 178 acres of parkland.

With a farm-to-table ethos, Aquariva serves wholesome Italian food, like farro risotto and braised lamb ragu, and has received praised from Zagat for its “delicious, creative and moderately priced plates”. There’s a daily happy hour (3-6:30pm), or visit on Sunday to create your own bloody marys and mimosas at the city’s only self-service bar. The riverfront position is “one of the most scenic dining locations in Portland”, says Fodor’s -- grab a seat on the outdoor terrace if you can.

Chic and comfortable, rooms are carpeted, beds have cozy quilts and bathrooms are well equipped with both a bathtub and a shower. Opt for a suite for a separate sitting room, where you can curl up in front of the gas fireplace in cooler months. Large windows make the most of the countryside, wooded or river-bend views, and many rooms have balconies. Pets are welcome (extra charge applies) and the hotel has dedicated dog-friendly rooms.

From the press:
  • "Aquariva, an Italian restaurant and wine bar on the premises, serves wonderful tapas and drinks" -- Fodor’s
  • "The hotel rooms are stylish (and some have sweet river views), while the spa is a lavish two-story affair offering a wide range of treatments" -- Sunset

The only thing was that we got only one towel the first morning and after requesting another one, it came too late to use. We had to share a towel. And we ran out of toilet paper, and requested some more but finally took some from the bathroom that was nearby. The staff was really nice and concerned but didn't follow through.

A very beautiful, peaceful place with very nicely appointed rooms and great balconies. The staff made us all feel so welcome - making our stay a happy one was a genuine priority. Having a wonderful top-notch restaurant (Aquariva) only a few steps away was truly an added bonus - creative dining options and hearty breakfasts. Also, being able to stroll along the river was terrific.

The balcony overlooking the river. Plus we loved the location because we were traveling with our bikes (and they provide bikes too). It's right on a great bike path and close to a great new bridge that allows you to cross over the river easily to access more adventures! Easy to get downtown and the Saturday farmers market. I'm not sure we would like it as much if we were not traveling by bike - although it's also quite close to tram lines.

Nice, very helpful staff and lovely room. We did have an issue with dog/cat hair on some of the furniture and a bit of wear and tear but overall nice room. We would stay again if we got a similar deal.
