With funky retro interiors and a boutique feel, the Santa Cruz Dream Inn is “as stylish as Santa Cruz gets,” raves Lonely Planet. The hotel’s main draw, though, is its position right on the beach -- it’s the only hotel in Santa Cruz with direct access to Cowell Beach, and the ocean views are perfect. The fairground rides on the boardwalk and Santa Cruz Wharf are just two blocks away, and Pacific Avenue in downtown Santa Cruz is a five-minute walk.

A converted and fully renovated 1970s motel building, the hotel is cleverly designed to make the most of the views, with both wings facing the beach and the bay beyond. Inside, the detailing is similarly beachy. Surfing photos adorn the walls and surf boards are suspended from the ceiling in the on-site Aquarius restaurant. Expect a focus on seafood here -- try the California coast yellowtail with cilantro risotto.

On-site facilities are geared toward the laid-back beach lifestyle, with a heated outdoor pool, Jacuzzi and poolside bar service (April-October) -- staff will even valet store your surf board or bike if you’ve got one with you. While there’s no gym at the hotel, free yoga classes are offered (weekends at 11 a.m., seasonally), and there are plenty of running trails at nearby Neary Lagoon Park.

The larger-than-average rooms all face Monterey Bay and each has its own patio or balcony. Ground-floor rooms open straight onto the pool deck. Suites are a good choice for families, with a sleeper sofa in the separate sitting room.

From the press:
  • "The city’s lone beachfront hotel, with a 1960s retro theme and Jetsons-style furniture" -- The New York Times
  • "The main draw here is having the ocean at your doorstep" -- Fodor’s
  • "Finally, a decent-sized hotel within Santa Cruz that we want to stay in ... with stellar oceanfront views" -- Frommer’s

The view of the ocean. Right on the beach. Great service and beautiful decor. The staff were all very accommodating and kind. We checked in early and got an upgrade to a higher floor.

The hotel itself will be beautiful once completed. The new rooms are modern and well appointed. The bed was super comfy and the view was lovely! Going to sleep with the sound of ocean waves breaking was heavenly. The restaurant staff were all so very nice!! The food was delicious. The pool area was fantastic!

I found the staff condescending They were prepared for our arrival and didn't acknowledge that we purchased through Travelzoo or know what extras came with the package. We had to ask for each item that came with the package individually and they didn't have the candy. Not that candy is a big deal but I've never had the experience where the front desk didn't acknowledge all of the services that come with a package and explain them or act like they are expecting your arrival. Also, the hotel itself is very confusing to navigate during construction I'm not sure if recommend the hotel yet - I think some customer service training is needed. I'm not sure if I've received my cocktail or breakfast credits - I need to look at my bill - I had to ask several times for each extra

Ocean view from our room

We've been to the Dream Inn several times and love the location and the fact that all rooms are ocean view. The only disadvantage of this trip is that the pool area is been remodeled and could not use it.

Falling asleep to the sound of the surf!

The Dream Inn never disappoints. We were a bit wary of the new ownership and the construction, but everything was absolutely seamless. The staff was gracious as ever, our room had not yet been remodeled but was as clean and comfortable as ever. Aquarius and the Jack O'Neil lounge were as great as ever. Can't wait to return in May!!

The location and the views.

It was kind of a bummer since we have 2 young children that the pool was closed due to construction. It would have been nice to know beforehand.

Normally we go there to relax.
Other Comments
We booked a 3 night Travelzoo rate and arrived to find out that the hotel had sold to a new owner and was under heavy construction. We go there to relax and listen to the ocean. Not a Jackhammer! We went there to celebrate a birthday and checked out after 1 night. Travelzoo should have informed us of the construction!
