Overview

The Academy is a 4-star boutique townhouse complex in London's bustling West End. The 18th-century hotel is made up of five Georgian townhouses in Bloomsbury and "offers a sense of sanctuary just yards from the bustle of Bloomsbury and Oxford Street", says Frommer's.

The hotel is in a great location -- the British Museum, dedicated to human history, art and culture, is less than 10 minutes' walk away. Covent Garden is a 15-minute walk away, the shops on Oxford Street are around 15 minutes' walk away and Bond Street is a 25 minutes' walk away.

Through twisting corridors and staircases you'll find 49 rooms and suites restored to accentuate their Regency character, some with views over the property's private courtyard gardens. Some of the Junior Suites include marble fireplaces, and all have Nespresso machines. Homely features include a well-stocked library, antique furniture and floral fabrics. The hotel also offers a 24-hour porter service.

Guests can dine in the Alchemy Bar, which serves classic British dishes such as beer-battered fish and chips with mushy peas, as well as international cuisine. You can take afternoon tea in the library or the conservatory.

Note: The hotel will be undergoing refurbishment from 1 September, 2017-1 April, 2018. Public areas, bedrooms and bathrooms will be renovated one townhouse at a time, with minimal disturbance to guests. There will be some scaffolding around the hotel and the conservatory garden will be closed.

From the press:

  • "The Academy goes for the country intellectual look, in keeping with Bloomsbury's studious yet decadent history" -- Time Out

  • "A private courtyard garden adds allure to this cosy boutique hotel set in a series of renovated Georgian townhouses in Bloomsbury" -- Zagat

If I was to go again, I would request a low room as there was no lift and it was 60+ stairs to our room.

Staff were lovely and the room in general was nice. The cream tea was enjoyable and the breakfast was excellent. The hotel location was good and there was a very pleasant garden at the rear.

We didn't an get upgraded room or early check in. Our room was on the 3rd floor which was up six flights of stair and with breakfast in the basement that was7 flights! The shower tray in the bathroom looked rank it was very old and tatty. My card details were taken at check and although we didn't buy anything on my return home I saw £30 had been taken from my account. When we contacted the hotel they told me they would refund the money.

The room was much smaller than it looked in pic. The library is a very small room with a two seater sofa . The doors all around the hotel need a good clean. Our net curtain was hanging off our bedroom window. The decor is good but all a bit grubby.

We had a problem getting back into the hotel at around midnight. We were told to ring the bell if it was after 10pm but were left standing outside for over 15 minutes with some other guests. We could see the porter through the window but he was on his mobile phone. We knocked on the window and the door - he saw us and just ignored us.
