Overview

A converted stately home that overlooks Dorset's Chesil Beach and the Fleet Lagoon, Moonfleet Manor is surrounded by rural scenery and coastal walks. The hotel is on the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with cliffs and coves that are known for their fossils. The Dorset Coast Path and Chesil Beach -- which, at 18 miles, is said to be the longest shingle beach in the world -- are also on the hotel's doorstep.

Abbotsbury, a picture-postcard village of honey-coloured buildings that's home to Abbotsbury Swannery, as well as popular beach fishing spots, is a 15-minute drive away. From the hotel, you can walk the South West Coast Path along the West Dorset Heritage Coast, or drive 20 minutes to Weymouth SEA LIFE Adventure Park and Tower and feed penguins and green sea turtles. The Isle of Portland, with its famous red-and-white Portland Bill Lighthouse and abundance of fish-and-chip shops, takes 30 minutes to reach by car.

According to The Daily Telegraph, "you will be well looked after" at this hotel, and there is something for everyone: facilities include a cinema, three heated indoor swimming pools, a sauna and beauty treatment rooms. The Mediterranean-style restaurant uses local suppliers for everything from seafood to ale.

With two cosy lounges and a garden terrace, there's plenty of space in which to unwind. Children are well catered for, too -- there is an indoor football pitch, a skittle alley, an Ofsted-registered crèche and baby-listening services (extra charges apply). Dogs can stay for £15 per dog, per night (payable to the hotel).

The food was good and our room was nice. Lovely location

We were there as a couple and this hotel is really aimed at young families which was our fault in not reading the offer propely. Although every staff member we spoke to was very helpful, there was no one about and we had to go and find someone each time we wanted anything. Not sure about the extras. We were not offered a cream tea, so felt a bit awkward asking for it, but when it came it was delicious. Our room was nice but we were not told if this was an upgrade and we were not offered a late check out. We enjoyed our stay but also felt that a little more cleaning and maintenance in some of the areas would be good. The verandah area had ripped flooring and cushions and there did seem to be a lack of cleanliness generally in washroom etc. Also the sauna was unavailable which was a disappointment to us. I am sure families would like it here but we would not visit again

Breakfast was superb but we thought dinner food could have been better, although the restaurant service was excellent.

Open fires and comfortable lounge with good service was very enjoyable.

I looked forward to a ciabatta from the lunch menu only to be told it would be a panini instead as they had run out. My bubble and squeak was presented at dinner with an apology from the Chef for having broken the duck egg. How difficult is it to cook another one? Breakfast on Sunday morning was only just warm and the scrambled egg was most odd. I went with high expectations of the restaurant and these were sadly dashed. It dampened what would otherwise have been a lovely weekend. The front of house manager and his staff were excellent.
