A converted stately home that overlooks Dorset's Chesil Beach, Moonfleet Manor is surrounded by stunning scenery and great walks. The hotel is on the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with cliffs and coves that are known for their fossils. The Dorset Coast Path and Chesil Beach -- at 18 miles, the longest shingle beach in the world -- are on the hotel's doorstep.

East along the shore is secluded Church Ope Cove, a great spot for swimming, diving and fishing, while eight miles west is Abbotsbury, a picture-postcard village of honey-coloured buildings that's also home to Abbotsbury Swannery. You can stroll along the beach to the Isle of Portland to see the lighthouse and sample some great fish and chips, while Weymouth SEA LIFE Adventure Park and Tower is a short drive away.

According to The Daily Telegraph, "you will be well looked after" at this Georgian manor house, with something for everyone: facilities include a cinema, three heated indoor swimming pools, a sauna and sumptuous spa treatment rooms. The Mediterranean-style restaurant takes pride in using local suppliers for everything from seafood to ales.

There are 36 rooms, from double rooms to vast 2-floor suites in the nearby coach house. With two cosy lounges and a garden terrace, there's also plenty of space to sprawl.

Friendliness of staff and general ambiance of the hotel.

The only disapointment was with the main course ribeye steak which was very tough and not as flavoursome as was expected. However, we have no complaint about its cooking which was medium to rare as required. The fault was clearly in the butchering of the meat. We considered the pre dinner drinkswe chose to be rather expensive. (£22.90 for one G&T and one Martini and leamonade).

Found the travel zoo website unhelpful as it would not let me know if two rooms were available, when I telephoned it was even worse, nobody could answer my queries, so had to contact the hotel to confirm that two rooms would be available, then go back to travel zoo to book what should have taken minutes took hours and many phone calls.

the food and tranquillity, the ambience

There is probably less tranquillity if you go during the school holidays! But then this is a family hotel. The facilities on offer for families are fantastic.

Staff were very accomodating and friendly. Evening meal was was very good, as was the wine. Breakfast, if you ordered was really nice, Smoked salmon in particular. Self service hot food looked less nice. Great to sit by the fire and read, the fires were goinga ll day.

Only negative was that the room we were in had a connecting door to the next room and as such was not very well sound proofed. Great view though

Great for family's with young children lots for them to do. Not so great if you haven't got young children. Hotel did do earlier sitting for meals for them but when we where sitting having a pre dinner drink some where running around which was annoying. But as I say great for family's with children.
