Why We Love This Hotel

  • This is a party hotel -- the Olympic-size pool attracts a young and lively scene on weekends

  • On-site restaurant El Jefe serves up authentic Mexican street food

The Saguaro Palm Springs opened to acclaim in 2012 and swiftly picked up a chic, loyal following and rave reviews from Conde Nast Traveler, which calls it a "hip retreat with the help of psychedelic colors." The property is located on the quieter southern end of Palm Springs, though the colorful, retro décor is anything but muted.

The hotel has a trendy on-site restaurant, El Jefe, where guests can sip freshly made specialty cocktails like the Tipsy Cactus and enjoy small plates like short rib tacos or spinach quesadillas.

The hotel’s best feature, however, is its pool deck with two hot tubs and an Olympic-size pool, which stays open late. It attracts a lively crowd on summer weekends, when the DJ spins all day long and the deck buzzes with the young and trendy. The stunning mountain backdrop only makes it more picturesque. Take note, however: During the week, the partiers head back to LA, and the hotel scene is much quieter and more family oriented.

The hotel may be small, but it isn’t short on amenities. There’s a 24-hour gym, yoga classes every morning and a shuttle bus that provides transport to downtown Palm Springs. There’s also a bocce ball court, a small spa and bikes with which to explore the surrounding mountain trails.

The rooms are fun with purple carpets, handcrafted Mexican furniture, vintage prints and striped bedspreads. Suites have separate living rooms, and almost every room has a balcony or patio. The hotel is pet friendly and there is non-refundable $50 fee.

Note: The pool and hot tub are closed through Jan. 16, 2019.

The walls are a little thin so you can hear people in the next rooms if they are loud. The carpets in the rooms could be updated

The yoga class, weight room and pool were nice; however, we would not return to the Saguaro hotel.

Not a good experience at all. Upon arrival on Sunday afternoon we were told that we were “upgraded,” to what we could not understand because the poor receptionist had difficulty talking higher than a whisper. We soon found at that instead of the “mountain view” booked when we made the reservation, the only view that we had was of the pool, which was hardly an “upgrade” at all. We also asked for a room on the highest floor, but were put into a room on the middle floor instead. When we called the front desk about this, the employee told us that the hotel was “overbooked” and that in their system a pool view was an upgrade from a mountain view. There was something that they could have done to make a positive first impression and correct these obvious errors, but they did not do so. The appearance of the hotel left a very poor impression. All doors inside and out were painted in different neon colors. It would have been easier to look at if the white walls would have clean and free from scuff marks. The dark purple hall carpet was also not easy to keep clean, and the dirty dishes left outside the door by guests were littering the hallway and picked up infrequently. There were also strong artificial bubble gum smells throughout the corridor, which were not very appealing. Regarding the cleanliness of our room (#211), there was a black chip mark in our bath tub the size of a dollar coin. However, we did not hurt our toes on it. The sink fixture in the bathroom squeaked and difficult to turn in either direction. The refrigerator gurgled loudly and we were also woken up several times each night (and early the next morning) due to the enormous amount of the ceiling noise from people walking in the room on the floor above. This was the chief reason why we asked for a room on the top floor when we first arrived at the hotel, a request which was not responded to even though the parking lot seemed more than half empty. On Tuesday (3/5/19) at 10:30 AM we went to check out at the reception desk, as the online checkout was not working. We were then informed that we were charged an additional $29 for a movie which we did not watch. We were also told that the manager who could investigate this was not going to start until 12:30 PM. They took our phone number and said that they would call us, but no called was received. When we called the hotel to resolve this at 12:40 PM, we were put on hold for 10 minutes, and our first call was also dropped. Finally, the manager Brandon was able to resolve the issue and took the charges off. It would have been nice if someone would have been available to respond this error while we checked out, instead of needing to call the hotel again and have to resolve their error with our time and expense.

Speaker inside the room. Close to downtown. Booking was easy via travelzoo but overall experience made it seem like we should have stayed home. At least we knew we could get inside.

When we arrived, our key card didn't work to get inside the building or our room. We had to pack everything back up in the car to go back to the front. This happened 2 other times and the last time was at night after we went out and we were tired. We had to wait for security to let us in. Somewhat of a let down worrying about each time we would leave if we would have to be interrupted from our get away to contact the front desk. Our small round table inside the room was sticky when we went to sit down and eat our food we got from Ralphs. Fortunately I had wipes and was able to clean it up. This was our anniversary and we had heard great things. Not a great way to celebrate your first year of marriage.

The redo of this 250 room hotel in 2011, which took its inspiration from desert flowers, Yaacov Agam and Victor Vasarely. was amusing and full of delights. With the daily fee (which we had included), we got free bikes, yoga classes, shuttle service and more!

your menu is very limited. You definitely should put coffee pots in the room, for the price you charge that was a big huge massive mistake on your part. .
