Downtown Palm Springs practically knocks at the door of the Palm Mountain Resort. Set one block off the "pleasantly touristy" Palm Canyon Drive (Fodor's), full of shops, cafes and bustling sidewalks, it's the location that keeps guests coming back.
Cross the street to hunt for retro treasures at the Mercado Plaza, a 200-store collection of small boutiques, antique stores and art houses, or stroll 10 minutes east to the Spa Casino. The Palm Springs Convention Center is less than a 20-minute walk.
After exploring on foot, head back to the hotel for a dip in the palm tree-lined pool where there's plenty of shade and a water mister to keep cool on even the hottest of days. The San Jacinto Mountains rise up from behind the hotel for some pretty desert views.
Simple rooms are a comfortable retreat from the heat. There's a full-service spa but no gym, though guests can head to Palm Springs Fitness Center for classes and equipment free of charge.
