Why We Love It

  • Ghyll Manor Hotel & Restaurant is in the rural Sussex village of Rusper
  • This 17th-century country house hotel is set in more than 40 acres of grounds and has a private lake
  • The restaurant has an AA Rosette

Ghyll Manor Hotel & Restaurant is a converted 17th-century timber-framed manor house in Rusper, a small village in West Sussex. It's set in over 40 acres of gardens with a private lake, a terrace with a dais and an old amphitheatre. Inside, vintage and contemporary features include original beams and modern furniture.

Rusper, in the district of Horsham, has a village shop, a park, public tennis courts and two pubs. There are many walking routes nearby, including the 150-mile Sussex Border Path, which runs along Rusper High Street. Nutbourne Vineyards, Arundel Castle and the National Trust's Wakehurst Place are all within 40 minutes' drive of the hotel.

Brighton, with its famous shopping area The Lanes, the Royal Pavilion and Victorian seafront, is around 40 minutes' drive away, and the cathedral city of Chichester is within an hour's drive.

Guests can have drinks and afternoon tea in the conservatory or the Terrace Room, which has a large patio overlooking the gardens. The AA-Rosette-awarded restaurant serves classic dishes such as tempura-battered king prawns and confit chicken leg.

There are 29 rooms, all with free Wi-Fi. Standard and Superior Rooms are in the modern Stable Mews in the grounds.

Note: the hotel is eight miles from Gatwick Airport, so there might be some aircraft noise.

From the press:

  • "A timbered manor house in 40 acres of picture-perfect Sussex countryside, Ghyll Manor is an obvious candidate for a retreat from the city" -- The AA Restaurant Guide 2019

The room was lovely and the staff very helpful and attentive. It was also very quiet so suited our plan as we were there to explore some business ideas.

Overall good experience. Staff were very attentive, probably the best service received during our travels.

Would go there again. Good experience. Only criticism was that the bar could have had a better choice of beers, they are limited to only two I believe and not two that I had heard of before. Other than that - really enjoyed my short stay there.

Tired hotel. Buck’s Fizz wasn’t worth having, 4 parts orange juice to 1 part fizz! Had an upgraded room and rooms are shabby, shower pathetic and toilet needs a good scrub, food well presented but not served with a smile, so the chefs hard work is spoiled by the waiter who is miserable. Breakfast served with a smile by lovely breakfast waitress. A functional night but would not dash back for the experience! The hotel needs some serious money injecting into it to upgrade the rooms
