Overview

Ghyll Manor Hotel & Restaurant is a converted 17th-century timber-framed manor house in Rusper, a small village in West Sussex. It's set in over 40 acres of gardens with a private lake, a terrace with a dais and an old amphitheatre. Inside, vintage and contemporary features include original beams and modern furniture.

Rusper, in the district of Horsham, has a village shop, a park, public tennis courts and two pubs. There are many walking routes nearby, including the 150-mile Sussex Border Path, which runs along Rusper High Street. Nutbourne Vineyards, Arundel Castle and Wakehurst are all within 40 minutes' drive of the hotel. Wakehurst is owned by the National Trust but managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; it's home to a wild botanic garden and a Grade I-listed Elizabethan manor house.

Brighton, with its famous shopping area The Lanes, the Royal Pavilion and Victorian seafront, is around 40 minutes' drive away, and the cathedral city of Chichester is within an hour's drive.

Guests can have drinks and afternoon tea in the conservatory or the Terrace Room, which has a large patio overlooking the gardens. The AA-Rosette-awarded restaurant serves classic dishes such as house smoked mackerel croquettes, seabass en papillote and banana tart tatin.

There are 29 rooms, all with free Wi-Fi. Standard and Superior Rooms are in the modern Stable Mews in the grounds.

Note: the hotel is eight miles from Gatwick Airport, so there might be some aircraft noise.

Altogether a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The grounds are beautiful, well kept and a pleasure to stroll around. The staff were pleasant and helpful at all times.

Friendly staff, good location, nice atmosphere

A hairdryer in the room would have been useful. But when our phone charger stopped working it was no problem borrowing one from reception. Restaurant was lovely, breakfast was really good, but the dinner menu was rather limited.

Everything was excellent.

The 4 star rating for the room instead of 5 star, was not for the room but for the maid service which could have been better. I filled out a form at the hotel about this as constructive criticism, so that they could address the issue.

Room was cleaned daily and the staff were pleasant enough.

How long have you got? Carpet in room stained in some places and threadbare in a few places; starter and main course (included in price) tasteless; our choice of main course and dessert not available when we sat down for dinner 45 mins after dining room open (did they not know guest numbers)?; had to ask for complimentary cava Buck’s Fizz; I requested a little nod to my husband’s birthday (6 June) 3 days before we went and was told they would provide a birthday plate. I thought this would be in the room but it this never materialised. I rang reception about it on our arrival (when I wanted it to be a surprise) and was told it would be in the restaurant. It wasn’t so I asked again the next day, the receptionist looked it up and said ‘housekeeping must’ve missed it ‘; we had to wait 15-20 minutes for cooked breakfast items on the second day (I refer to my comment about guest numbers). It’s not as advertised so was extremely disappointing.
