Ghyll Manor Hotel & Restaurant is a converted 17th-century timber-framed manor house in Rusper, a small village in West Sussex. It's set in over 40 acres of gardens with a private lake, a terrace with a dais and an old amphitheatre. Inside, vintage and contemporary features include original beams and modern furniture.

Rusper, in the district of Horsham, has a village shop, a park, public tennis courts and two pubs. The countryside location is ideal for walking -- the 150-mile Sussex Border Path runs along Rusper High Street, close to the hotel. Nutbourne Vineyards, Arundel Castle and the National Trust's Wakehurst Place are all within 40 minutes' drive of the hotel.

Brighton, with its famous shopping area The Lanes, the Royal Pavilion and Victorian seafront, is around 40 minutes' drive away, and the cathedral city of Chichester is within an hour's drive.

Guests can have drinks and afternoon tea in the conservatory or the Terrace Room, which has a large patio overlooking the gardens. The AA-Rosette-awarded restaurant serves classic dishes with an unfussy modern twist.

There are 29 rooms, all with free Wi-Fi. Standard and Superior Rooms are in the modern Stable Mews in the grounds.

Note: The hotel is eight miles from Gatwick Airport, so there might be some aircraft noise.

From the press:

  • "A timbered manor house in 40 acres of picture-perfect Sussex countryside, Ghyll Manor is an obvious candidate for a retreat from the city" -- The AA Restaurant Guide 2018

Garden cottage was delightful. Really a large suite with separate lounge, bedroom and bathroom

Both my partner and myself have mobility problems and hand rails in the bathroom would be helpful

Good sized room. Lovely grounds.
Other Comments
We stayed in a room which is an extension to the main building. It is a good sized room but the lighting is poor. There are side lamps but no central light and no spotlights so it is quite dark inside. Not good for reading or for seeing what you are doing when cleaning! The meal size is modest. We usually have two courses but managed three with no difficulty and no waste. More choice is needed at breakfast time eg fruit platter and muesli or granola.

Excellent service and a warm welcome. Good food. Excellent room but carpet was poorly fitted which is a shame as it spoilt the overall impression a bit.

Quite expensive meals and rather small portions. Not the place if you have a hearty appetite.

Although my friend and I could not fault our stay we did find the decor of our room tired and needed redecorating....but we were told that decoration was on the list to be done shortly.
