Why We Love This Hotel

  • Ghyll Manor Hotel & Restaurant is in the rural Sussex village of Rusper
  • This 17th-century country house hotel is set in more than 40 acres of grounds and has a private lake
  • The hotel’s location is "handy for walks in the Surrey Hills or South Downs", says The Daily Telegraph

Ghyll Manor Hotel & Restaurant is a converted 17th-century timber-framed manor house in Rusper, a small village in West Sussex. It's set in over 40 acres of gardens with a private lake, a terrace with a dais and an old amphitheatre. Inside, vintage and contemporary features include original beams and modern furniture.

Guests can have drinks and afternoon tea in the conservatory or the Terrace Room, which has a large patio overlooking the gardens. The hotel restaurant serves classic dishes such as house smoked mackerel croquettes, seabass en papillote and banana tart tatin.

There are 29 rooms, all of which have free Wi-Fi. Standard and Superior Rooms are in the modern Stable Mews in the grounds

Rusper, in the district of Horsham, has a village shop, a park, public tennis courts and two pubs. There are many walking routes nearby, including the 150-mile Sussex Border Path, which runs along Rusper High Street. Nutbourne Vineyards, Arundel Castle and Wakehurst are all within 40 minutes' drive of the hotel. Wakehurst is owned by the National Trust but managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; it's home to a wild botanic garden and a Grade I-listed Elizabethan manor house.

Brighton, with its famous shopping area The Lanes, the Royal Pavilion and the Victorian seafront, is around 40 minutes' drive away, and the cathedral city of Chichester is within an hour's drive.

Note: the hotel is eight miles from Gatwick Airport, so there might be some aircraft noise.

We had a great night away. The staff were very friendly, the evening meal and breakfast were really nice and the rooms clean and cosy.

Hotel best described as shabby-chic. Would I go back? - only if I absolutely had to be in the area. We were on a deal & they placed us in the furthest set of rooms possible from the main hotel building even though it was nowhere near full. Food was excellent but service was poor. Our deal included a glass of Bucks Fizz - we had to ask for it 3 times. We ordered port with our cheese and had to ask twice for it be served. We asked for a small jug of milk for tea in our room, again we had to ask twice.

Excellent hotel in lovely location. Friendly staff and great service. On edge of small rural village with local pubs and plenty of walking opportunities. The room was comfortable and clean and the complex is set in lovely surroundings. Food and service was pleasant although the buffet breakfast was a little lacking in variety. Would highly recommend and will definitely return to this great hotel.
