"Location was great and the grounds were fabulous.... However I paid extra for a superior room upgrade and although the room was spacious enough, it was a little gloomy. Also the three-course mealk options were limited.... especially as 25% of the menu was unavailable."

Overview

Ghyll Manor Hotel & Restaurant is a converted 17th-century timber-framed manor house in Rusper, a small village in West Sussex. It's set in over 40 acres of gardens with a private lake, a terrace with a dais and an old amphitheatre. Inside, vintage and contemporary features include original beams and modern furniture.

Rusper, in the district of Horsham, has a village shop, a park, public tennis courts and two pubs. There are many walking routes nearby, including the 150-mile Sussex Border Path, which runs along Rusper High Street. Nutbourne Vineyards, Arundel Castle and Wakehurst are all within 40 minutes' drive of the hotel. Wakehurst is owned by the National Trust but managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; it's home to a wild botanic garden and a Grade I-listed Elizabethan manor house.

Brighton, with its famous shopping area The Lanes, the Royal Pavilion and Victorian seafront, is around 40 minutes' drive away, and the cathedral city of Chichester is within an hour's drive.

Guests can have drinks and afternoon tea in the conservatory or the Terrace Room, which has a large patio overlooking the gardens. The AA-Rosette-awarded restaurant serves classic dishes such as house smoked mackerel croquettes, seabass en papillote and banana tart tatin.

There are 29 rooms, all with free Wi-Fi. Standard and Superior Rooms are in the modern Stable Mews in the grounds.

Note: the hotel is eight miles from Gatwick Airport, so there might be some aircraft noise.

Went for my husbands birthday he loved it. We had a superior room which was spacious and very nice. The bathroom was a bit tired but the shower had lovely view with tree outside which numerous birds were visiting! Evening meal and breakfast were very nice and the staff were very helpful. Lovely grounds. We would like to go again.

Location to close to Gatwick airport take off runway. Room, although spacious, was "tired" and needed maintenance work. Meal (I had the "fish of the day") was inadequate to say the least. The mushroom was larger than the fish!!

Overall very pleasant stay. Slightly disappointed though that room was on the ground floor (not made clear when booking) with no window locks so unable to have ventilation on a very warm summer evening! Also, only one set of toiletries provided (one shampoo, one shower gel) for two adults isn’t sufficient for both to shower before dinner and again the following morning. Food at dinner was excellent. The following morning, service at breakfast was a little chaotic but staff were all very pleasant.
