The Royal Exeter Hotel is a stately Victorian property in Bournemouth town centre, five minutes' walk from the beach. It was once home to Lewis Tregonwell, a naval captain charged with defending the coastline around Bournemouth.

Lonely Planet sums up why Bournemouth is a great place to visit, pointing out its "glorious 7-mile strip of soft sand", "hip hideaways" and "tempting watersports". There's an abundance of things to see and do, including Bournemouth Gardens and the Oceanarium (The Bournemouth Aquarium), which are a 5-minute walk from the hotel. You can also catch a show at the Bournemouth International Centre, which is directly opposite the hotel.

Bar So serves food and drink throughout the day, and mixologists make bespoke, seasonal and classic cocktails. 1812 Restaurant & Bar serves European fare and offers both set and à la carte menus. It has an energetic vibe, with entertainment including live music, so it may be a little noisy.

The hotel has 54 bedrooms, and all have free Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service. There's also a small on-site gym.

Friendly reception and waiting staff, comfortable and spotless room and excellent location. Also reception were very helpful with our queries. We were able to park at the hotel which makes such a difference. The 1812 bar was very popular with us and really good cocktails!

The amount of stairs, to the room, although they had a lift, we we're in between floors. The evening meal, steak was tough.

Our previous 2 stays there.

I got charged £4.50 for a drink I never had because the bar lady rang the charge in twice. This shows up on the invoice given to me at check out. We paid £24 for a bottle of Pinot Grigio white wine at dinner and it was of very poor quality. I pointed this out when I checked out but was given no refund or goodwill gesture. I hate being ripped off and although we enjoyed our 2 previous stays at the Royal Exeter ,we wont be going back unless someone tries to help us change our minds.
