Overview

The Lion and Pheasant occupies a Grade II-listed former coaching inn on Wyle Cop, in the market town of Shrewsbury. Parts of the inn date from the 16th century, and Charles Dickens reputedly once stayed there.

The hotel is a 2-minute walk from the banks of the River Severn and a 5-minute walk from Shrewsbury Abbey, which was founded in 1083 and was the setting for ITV's "Cadfael". Quarry Park -- an area known for its landscaped gardens and flower displays -- is around 15 minutes' walk away, and the hotel is less than 20 minutes' drive from the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The restaurant has two AA Rosettes and is recommended by The Good Pub Guide 2020. It is split between two floors and serves modern European dishes, made with local and seasonal ingredients. The Daily Telegraph praises the "plentiful" menus and "cosy, relaxed feel".

The hotel's décor features natural materials such as limed oak, linens and silks. The rooms are contemporary in design, with silk furnishings, antiques, and oak and wrought-iron beds, creating a "light and airy" feel (The Daily Telegraph).

Very helpful. Heating in room not working after floods totally understandable. Gave us electric heater and complementary bottle of wine.

The Lion and Pheasant had been in the news re the flooding in Shrewsbury so I contacted the hotel and they assured me that they were up and running. We also had a possible problem with transport. We were travelling to Shrewsbury on the Heart of Wales line and it was suspended the day before we were travelling. Luckily it was all OK in the end and The Lion and Pheasant was a great hotel, I would toughly recommend the place.

Very pleasant hotel. Bar and restaurant lovely. The evening meal food was good and the veggie breakfast excellent. All of the staff were friendly and helpful. We needed to move car from car park as we stayed there at start of flooding and entrance was effected. They dealt with this very professionally and found us a space up the road in another hotel car park and paid for it. Flood wasn't an issue for the building while we were there. Excellent location for exploring the town. We particularly enjoyed the Charles Darwin trail.
