"We were made to feel very welcome in spite of having booked our car in at The Lion just up the hill from The Lion & Pheasant and on walking down toward the river came across the Lion & Pheasant and realised our mistake .Popped into the Lion & Pheasant to check if we were actually booked in. The Staff were very nice and stated that a number of people do that and vice versa,"

Why We Love This Hotel

  • The hotel is set in a Grade II-listed former coaching inn where Charles Dickens once stayed
  • The restaurant has two AA Rosettes and is recommended by The Good Pub Guide 2020
  • It's less than 20 minutes' drive from the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Overview

The Lion and Pheasant occupies a Grade II-listed former coaching inn on Wyle Cop, in the market town of Shrewsbury. Parts of the inn date from the 16th century, and Charles Dickens reputedly once stayed there.

The hotel is a 2-minute walk from the banks of the River Severn and a 5-minute walk from Shrewsbury Abbey, which was founded in 1083 and was the setting for ITV's "Cadfael". Quarry Park -- an area known for its landscaped gardens and flower displays -- is around 15 minutes' walk away, and the hotel is less than 20 minutes' drive from the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The restaurant has two AA Rosettes and is recommended by The Good Pub Guide 2020. It is split between two floors and serves modern European dishes, made with local and seasonal ingredients. The Daily Telegraph praises the "plentiful" menus and "cosy, relaxed feel".

The hotel's décor features natural materials such as limed oak, linens and silks. The rooms are contemporary in design, with silk furnishings, antiques, and oak and wrought-iron beds, creating a "light and airy" feel (The Daily Telegraph).

Stayed only for one night,. Staff were helpful and friendly, Our evening meal was superb. Our room was 'compact' spotlessly clean and modern. OK for an overnight stay.

The hotel is near the 'English Bridge' in a part of Shrewsbury know as Wyle Cop,. This does mean quite a steep hill has to be climbed to get to the main town centre,

The food was excellent
Other Comments
This was a great hotel. The only downside was that it is on a main road and we stayed on a really hot day so needed to have the window open - that made it a little noisy at night
