Described by National Geographic as a "storybook realm of hills, stonewalled fields, forests, whitewashed cottages, and clear waters", the Lake District is one of England's most-visited National Parks. Set above the lakeside village of Bowness-on-Windermere, the family-run Hillthwaite House Hotel offers pretty views over the lake and the mountains beyond.

Bowness-on-Windermere Pier is 20 minutes' walk from the hotel; from there you can catch a boat to take in the views. Prices start at £8 for an adult cruise ticket. Hill Top, the house Beatrix Potter bought with the royalties from her books, is now a National Trust property and is 30 minutes' drive away. The town of Kendal, best known for its mint cake, is a 20-minute drive. For an idyllic mix of limestone and woodland landscape, Whitbarrow Nature Reserve is around 30 minutes' drive.

Cream tea (served 2-4pm) is popular with locals and guests alike. Views are impressive in the restaurant, and you can dine out on the elevated stone terrace or in the conservatory. In cooler months, guests can cosy up in front of the warming fire with a book and a drink -- there are local ales on tap in the bar, as well as a good selection of spirits and wines.

Water wasn't hot in the evening and early morning due to boiler problem which we were not advised about. Room only available 2.30pm when had early check in on booking. Also had emailed hotel advising celebrating 40th Birthday but Hotel did nothing to acknowledge this which I was upset about.

The food was excellent and the staff serving it were also excellent - friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The menu was a little restricted and an item was "off" each night.
Other Comments
The quality of the room was poor. The bed was big and comfortable, but the décor was shabby, a light bulb was missing, the bathroom door rattled when the window was open and the shower dripped.
