Overview

Bovey Castle is set in extensive grounds within Dartmoor National Park and was used as a military hospital in World War II. The 5-AA-Red Star property won Hotel of the Year at the English Riviera & South Devon Tourism & Hospitality Awards 2016 and at the Visit Devon Awards 2016. The hotel also won two silver awards for the Spa & Wellbeing Experience.

The property was also featured in Condé Nast Traveller's Gold List 2011 and won a VisitEngland Bronze Award in the Hotel of the Year category in 2012.

The restaurant, spa and public spaces underwent a £2 million refurbishment and this luxurious baronial pile retains an intimate feel, with a combination of traditional country style and art deco furnishings -- warming fireplaces, cosy sofas and dark-wood panelling.

There are two restaurants: the glamorous Art Deco Great Western Restaurant (smart-casual dress required), which serves classic cuisine, and Smith's Brasserie which is named after WH Smith, who previously owned the private house. Think countryside views, roaring fires and cosy seating. We like the sound of the English pea soup, braised blade of Devonshire beef with carrots and red wine sauce, and the sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream. After dinner, sample one of the many whiskies at the traditional Oak Bar, or one of the 150 cocktails on the menu.

The rooms feature queen- or king-size beds and rich fabrics and have views of the valley, the golf course or the courtyard.

Other activities available (some with an extra charge) include sloe gin-making and cocktail-making classes, clay-pigeon shooting, horse riding, archery, rifle shooting, golf at the on-site 18-hole course and fly-fishing at the lake. Guests can take advantage of free croquet and tennis, or use the indoor swimming pool and fitness centre.

The hotel also has a spa, which was a finalist in The Good Spa Awards in 2012 and 2013. It has a sauna, steam room, gym and an indoor pool.

English cooked breakfast not brilliant: scrambled egg tasted like powdered egg and not fresh eggs, hash brown was greasy and although cutlery was in keeping with the castle/era there were no serrations so hard to cut bacon and sausages.

We loved the opulent but peaceful & relaxing feel to Bovey Castle. It is such a lovely hotel to stay in, the staff are really accommodating and friendly and there are plenty of activities to keep you occupied if you wish to take part.

We first went to Bovey Castle four years ago and the hotel, was magnificent with the most awsone art deco interior by Peter De savory. We were disappointed this tme to find that refurbishment had taken place and all was removed. The present decor is fine but it has been reduced to just a typical 5 star traditional hotel, found anywhere, when last time it was so interesting and beautiful and had the edge over any other hotel. Bring back the art deco I say then it would be magnificent plus.
