A favorite with Evita, Argentina’s most famous First Lady, the Savoy Hotel was one of the area’s first luxury hotels when it opened in 1910. Now remodeled and modernized, this small yet stately hotel retains a classy, old-world feel -- don’t miss the ornate lobby and the fabulous 1920s bar – and is a good-value option for anyone interested in seeing the city center sights.
The hotel is set on Avenida Callao, in the financial and political center, and is a 10-minute walk from the National Congress, making it especially popular with business travelers. It’s also a handy location for sightseeing -- the famous Plaza del Congreso and Plaza de Mayo are just around the corner, and it is 15 minutes on foot from the Obelisco. Buzzing Avenida Corrientes, with its theaters, restaurants and shops, is only two blocks from the hotel.Be sure to check out the art deco Abasto mall, just a short walk away.
The in-house restaurant offers all-day dining options and serves Mediterranean-influenced fusion food like pumpkin soup with ginger and lemongrass. There is also early morning coffee available -- ideal for early risers and business travelers -- and a VIP Lounge with free all-day drinks and snacks for those staying in Executive rooms or suites. A spacious fitness room is available on site, although machines are limited in number.
The public areas are wonderfully over the top, but the high-ceilinged guest rooms are more restrained, with only the occasional pop of scarlet. Some overlook the hotel’s internal courtyard, and the rest face the street -- a few even have balconies. If you prefer an outward-facing room be sure to request one on the higher floors as it can be noisy at street level. The pick of the bunch is room 111, which was home to Evita during her acting career. Daily breakfast and Wi-Fi are complimentary.
