Overview

The 5-star Rubens at the Palace boasts a unique location -- one of its nearest neighbours is Buckingham Palace -- and it offers views over the Royal Mews.

Built in the 1800s to accommodate debutantes attending royal parties, today it is walking distance to the Royal Parks, Victoria Station and Westminster -- and has garnered quite the reputation for its delightful staff and living wall, home to 10,000 plants.

Commonly for a historical property, some of the rooms are on the smaller side, but all are quiet and charming. The décor is traditional -- cozy beds, elegant drapes, antiques and original art (including portraits of Henry VIII).

Families are well cared for, with interconnecting rooms, pull-out sofa beds in the more spacious Executive King Rooms, treats at turndown and even a 'Director of Fun'. Pets are also welcome (charges apply).

With two restaurants, a separate lounge, two bars, including the intimate Leopard Champagne Bar, and 24-hour room service, The Rubens gives diners plenty of choice for every occasion – from cocktails, to light snacks, to a Royal Afternoon Tea and fine dining.

The English Grill restaurant offers a contemporary brasserie menu while The Palace Lounge is perfect for drinks, snacks, or afternoon tea overlooking the Royal Mews.

From the press:
  • "Lovely gem of a hotel... Staff treat you like a VIP from the moment you step into the lobby" -- Condé Nast Traveller
  • "It's the sort of hotel that must reassure visitors that Britain can still do things well when it puts its mind to it" -- The Daily Mail

Very comfortable bed once I was moved into a king size room. Rooms small and dark, only enough shampoo, shower gel for one. No biscuits with the tea/coffee making facilities.

We enjoyed our stay very much the hotel is in a good location and the staff are brilliant I would rate the room itself as a three star though room was cold when we arrived decor looks tired and the ensuite was a small bath with shower but all very tired condition in need of a rip out Also the ensuite was very cold as no heat source at and the towel rail also not heated large sash window without secondary glazing meant trips to the bathroom were not pleasant

Great service, nice ambience, good food.

Without the upgrade, I would have been very disappointed, as the first room was very small, very dark and overlooked the generators. The upgraded room however was much lighter and with a view over the mews. The bed was very comfortable and we slept well.
