OverviewThe 4-star Rubens at the Palace boasts a unique location -- one of its nearest neighbours is Buckingham Palace -- and it offers views over the Royal Mews.
Built in the 1800s to accommodate debutantes attending royal parties, today it is walking distance to the Royal Parks, Victoria Station and Westminster -- and has garnered quite the reputation for its delightful staff and living wall, home to 10,000 plants.
Commonly for a historical property, some of the rooms are on the smaller side, but all are quiet and charming. The décor is traditional -- cozy beds, elegant drapes, antiques and original art (including portraits of Henry VIII).
Families are well cared for, with interconnecting rooms, pull-out sofa beds in the more spacious Executive King Rooms, treats at turndown and even a 'Director of Fun'. Pets are also welcome (charges apply).
The Library Restaurant has been awarded two AA-Rosettes for its modern British fare, notably its Inverawe Scottish and Burren Irish Smoked Salmon (carved at the table), Gressingham duck breast with tarragon-stuffed mushrooms and the lauded honeycomb ice cream.
After dinner, retire to the Cavalry Bar for a cocktail. The addition of the hotel's 21-metre-high Living Wall in 2013 has inspired a range of garden-themed drinks, featuring bloom gin, elderflower and edible flowers.
There is no gym on-site, but free passes to the nearby LA Fitness are available, and Rubens also has a 'sports buddies' programme, where staff team up with guests to enjoy any number of sports.
