Why We Love This Hotel

  • The hotel is in a wooded valley in an area that has red deer, wild ponies and even an extinct volcano
  • William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge both lived nearby and were inspired by the landscape surrounding the hotel
  • Dunster Castle and Exmoor National Park are both less than 30 minutes' drive away
  • The Grade I-listed ruins of Glastonbury Abbey, and Tiverton Castle, a 17th-century country house, are less than an hour away by car

Overview

Combe House Hotel is a privately owned country house hotel in Somerset's Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Hidden away in a wooded valley, this boutique property has 17 individually styled bedrooms and a cosy cottage feel.

Located in the village of Holford, the hotel is around 30 minutes' drive from Taunton, Bridgwater and Minehead. Dunster Castle, a former motte and bailey castle that's now a grand country house, and Exmoor National Park are also half an hour's drive away, while Tiverton Castle, Glastonbury Abbey and the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare are within an hour's drive.

Wookey Hole Caves -- an extensive network of limestone caves that is noted for the legend of the Witch of Wookey Hole -- is just over an hour's drive away.

The Woodland Hill circular walk passes right by the hotel. It will take you through open heathland and offers impressive views of the Somerset Levels, the Mendip Hills, the Bristol Channel and the Brecon Beacons.

The on-site restaurant and bar use produce from local suppliers, from Somerset cider to artisan cheese.

Superior Rooms are more spacious than Classic Rooms and have garden views. Wi-Fi is free in public areas or you can pay £2.50 per day for in-room access.

Generally enjoyed our stay, but the quality of the food/cooking was really disappointing. Nearby pub offered a much improved experience. However, we will stay here again and hope they can do better, as the location is fantastic.

Staff seemed to have little interest, the 3course Sunday lunch was very disappointing, we were not offered the glass of prose of on arrival as was in package deal, when mentioned this at checkout I was told that we were'nt offered just in case we drove afterwards !!! But we could have them now ( when we were leaving to drive home ), but still charged for a pint of lager

Really friendly, welcoming and helpful staff. Good food and lovely relaxing atmosphere. Very dog friendly and we could walk from the hotel straight into the Quantock Hills, which we did on both days we were there. The hotel provides a number of laminated walking routes that you can borrow. The staff helped us out with a dog bowl ( we had forgotten ours) and extra dog towels to dry our wet and muddy collie. Our room was lovely and cosy with everything we needed for a relaxing stay. We particularly enjoyed tea and cake at the hotel after our walks. The homemade chocolate brownie and flapjack were superb.
