Why We Love It

  • The hotel is in a wooded valley in an area that has red deer, wild ponies and even an extinct volcano
  • William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge were inspired by the landscape surrounding the hotel, and both lived nearby
  • Dunster Castle and Exmoor National Park are both less than 30 minutes' drive away
  • The Grade I-listed ruins of Glastonbury Abbey, and Tiverton Castle, a 17th-century country house, are less than an hour away by car

Overview

Combe House Hotel is a privately owned country-house hotel in Somerset's Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Hidden away in a wooded valley, this boutique property has 17 individually styled bedrooms and a cosy cottage feel.

Located in the village of Holford, the hotel is also a 30-minute drive from Taunton, Bridgwater and Minehead. Dunster Castle, a former motte and bailey castle that's now a grand country house, and Exmoor National Park, are also half an hour's drive away, while Tiverton Castle, Glastonbury Abbey and the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare are within 50 minutes' drive.

Wookey Hole Caves -- an extensive network of limestone caves which is noted for the Witch of Wookey Hole -- is just over an hour's drive away.

The Woodland Hill circular walk passes right by the hotel. It will take you through open heathland and offers impressive views of the Somerset Levels, Mendip Hills, Bristol Channel and the Brecon Beacons.

The on-site restaurant and bar use produce from local suppliers, from Somerset cider to artisan cheese.

It's in a lovely spot, quite isolated but with lovely walks very nearby and set in a gorgeous village. The hotel itself is well appointed and the room was comfortable and the food was very good - we enjoyed it very much.

This is not really a criticism but more of an observation - the woman who greeted us at reception was pleasant and courteous, but the whole experience was very functional and without any sense of a 'welcome' let alone a 'warm welcome'. This is a missed opportunity for anyone in the hospitality industry. Similarly, at dinner and breakfast - the waitresses were pleasant and courteous, but lacked any sense of 'service' - looking out in case we needed anything, being available etc. The waitresses brought the food and took away the plates and were pleasant and courteous - but that is not what restaurant service is about. Going to a restaurant and going to a hotel is all about the total experience and the staff at the hotel were obviously not trained in hospitality. I say this because I travel a lot internationally and always notice the standards of service across Europe and the US in contrast to the UK. I say this only because I want the hotel to thrive and be successful.

Lovely small hotel in the most beautiful setting. Perfect if you like walking and the outdoors. Lovely food but at times the customer service just wasn't there. I think maybe the staff were a little overstretched but on the whole were very pleasant. Our room, no 21 was very nice however sadly was let down as is over the housekeeping staff quarters and they were extremely noisy and inconsiderate. When I telephoned down to reception to complain my call went unanswered and I had to go searching for a member of staff. Such a shame as it is a otherwise a peaceful retreat in beautiful and tranquil surroundings. Happy to report we were not at all disturbed by an evening function in a marquee on the lawns.
