- Rooms were renovated in 2013
Set on the Esplanade on the outskirts of Pentire, Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa offers uninterrupted views of what Lonely Planet calls "England's best-known surfing beach". The hotel is 10 minutes' drive from the bustling centre of Newquay, but the Atlantic Ocean views, quiet nights and easy access to Fistral Beach more than make up for the out-of-town location. Be sure to take the coastal path up to the left of the hotel, around Crantock Bay and on to West Pentire, for superb panoramas.
In the evenings, choose between relaxed fine dining at the on-site Beach View Restaurant, with dishes such as Cornish fillet steak, West Country pork three ways and rich chocolate fondant on the menu, and more casual fare at Bay Bar, which also serves traditional Cornish afternoon tea every day (12-6pm). Both restaurants have large windows facing the ocean, so you can admire the wide swathe of sands and watch the surfers skim the waves as you dine.
The in-house spa (open 7am-9pm) is a real highlight. As well as offering top-end treatments, there's also a chic indoor pool and Jacuzzi set beneath a 'starry' ceiling, a sauna and a steam room. The pool is for adult use only, but children under 16 can use the indoor pool at the sister hotel, The Esplanade (two minutes' walk down the road). Here they'll also find an indoor jungle gym and an outdoor play area.
Renovated in early 2013, the rooms all have the same beach-chic décor, with modern furniture and aqua-striped bedspreads. The Economy Rooms sacrifice space and views but are a great choice for budget travellers. Upgrade to a Seaview Room for more space and stunning views of Fistral Beach and the golf course next door -- the best come with balconies. Free Wi-Fi is available in all rooms, as are tea- and coffee-making facilities.
