Built in 1912, the boutique Palacio de Marquesa hotel sits in the foothills of Taos, New Mexico -- a historic Pueblo-style town known for its soaring mountain views, breathtaking valley and artistic roots.

Shaded by centuries-old willow trees and surrounded by gardens, the grounds make for a “peaceful mountain sanctuary” (Fodor’s) that feels more like a private estate than a hotel. There are only eight guest rooms -- all of which are arranged along a pathway with outdoor entrances and some with French doors that open to private patios.

Each room is a little different but all are dedicated to one of Taos’ many famous female artists including Georgia O’Keefe, Martha Reed and Agnes Martin, and feature hand-ilustrated portraits of the artists and a pallete of bright whites and muted neutrals. In-room kiva-style fireplaces, viga wood-beamed ceilings, marble showers and heated tile floors give rooms a cozy yet luxurious feel. A gourmet and made-to-order breakfast -- which Fodor’s calls impressive -- is served daily in the community room, a cozy communal gathering space in the adobe-style main building.

The hotel is a 15-minute walk from the historic Taos Plaza near art galleries, boutiques and restaurants, and guests receive a discount card for 15% off at many local museums and shops.

Wi-Fi is complimentary and the hotel has one pet-friendly room available.

From the press:
  • “Tile hearths, French doors, and traditional viga ceilings grace this sophisticated inn…All rooms overlook the gardens, and facilities include a small but excellent spa offering a wide range of treatments. The three-course breakfasts are impressive” -- Fodors
  • “A peaceful mountain sanctuary in historic Taos” -- Gayot
