Why We Love This Hotel

  • The hotel is in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Maritime Greenwich, 20 minutes from central London via the Docklands Light Railway
  • Nearby attractions include the National Maritime Museum, the Royal Observatory, Cutty Sark and the Old Royal Naval College
  • The O2 is a 20-minute bus ride away

De Vere Devonport House is in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Maritime Greenwich, an area that is steeped in naval history and contains attractions including the Old Royal Naval College and the National Maritime Museum.

This 4-star property occupies a collection of historic buildings that once formed part of the Royal Naval College. Its 99 rooms are decorated in contemporary style and have free Wi-Fi. Drinks are available from the Pantry, and can be taken into the Officers Mess to relax.

The hotel's landscaped grounds contain a small cemetery where Admiral Hardy (to whom Lord Nelson uttered his dying words at the Battle of Trafalgar) is buried. For more greenery, Greenwich Park is a 2-minute walk from the hotel, and the Royal Observatory is 10 minutes' walk away, at the top of a hill in the park -- the views from the top of the hill over Greenwich and towards Docklands are very impressive.

Tourist spots including the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich Market, the National Maritime Museum and Cutty Sark are all less than five minutes' walk from the hotel. Greenwich railway station, Cutty Sark Docklands Light Railway station and Greenwich Pier are all less than 10 minutes' walk from the hotel, making it easy to take public transport into town -- you can be seeing the sights of central London within 20 minutes. The O2 Arena is a 20-minute bus ride away.

The hotel was tired and scruffy throughout. The bed was small and the bathroom had pink mildew around the taps etc. Hot water machine not working at breakfast so hot water only from a flask.

Peaceful, leafy location in historic setting whilst being accessible for central London.

The single hot drink dispenser in the dining room was not functioning properly i.e. not adding milk, which created queues on the busy Sunday morning. It could also be better located, as it is right next to the door to the kitchen. Staff were happy to heat milk if requested, but things would have run more smoothly if they had simply placed a hot milk flask near the mugs. Just a small niggle- overall, a pleasant stay.

Only one complaint - there was no spare toilet roll in the bathroom and we ran out. Also no tissues in the tissue box.

Ambience a bit 'tired' eg blinds in room were old & rusty; common areas could do with an upgrade.

Thank you for a most enjoyable couple of days in your Hotel. We really appreciated the excellent offer, which made our visit more affordable. Excellent continental breakfast also.

The location, next to the Maritime Museum and the park. Comfort of the room, in a quiet corridor. Ease of access to wi-fi. Comfort of the bed. Quality of breakfast.
Other Comments
Our only criticism would be of the bar area - it was generally dark and deserted even after its advertised opening time of 5pm and it seemed impossible to light enough to read a book by.
