Overview

Hydro Hotel, which opened in 1895, is set on a cliff in Eastbourne's Meads area, just over a mile from the town centre and its Grade II-listed pier.

Local attractions include Beachy Head, which Lonely Planet describes as "a spot of thrilling beauty", the South Downs National Park and the Sussex Heritage Coast, which are all a 5-minute drive away.

This area is great for history buffs. Battle Abbey, a partially ruined Benedictine abbey and the site of the last successful invasion of England in 1066, is less than 40 minutes' drive away. Pevensey Castle, the ruins of William the Conqueror's first stronghold, is less than 25 minutes' drive away. Bodiam Castle, an impressive 14th-century moated castle, is less than an hour's drive away.

The hotel has sweeping sea views from its landscaped gardens, which include a croquet lawn and a putting green. There are two restaurants on site, which serve English and French cuisine (dinner must be booked in advance). Afternoon tea can be taken in the conservatory, and there is a lounge and a cocktail bar.

The AA describes the hotel's bedrooms as "attractive and well equipped", and all are individually decorated. Wi-Fi is free.

From the press:

  • "This well-managed and popular hotel enjoys an elevated position with views of attractive gardens and the sea beyond" -- The AA Hotel Guide 2018

Not knowing what Sussex cream tea meant. I was under the impression I was going to receive afternoon tea. So you could imagined my embarrassment and disappointment when seated amongst a packed restaurant to be served a small plate with one scone and half a strawberry with a small portion of clotted cream. Every other table had a selection of cakes and delicacies for their afternoon tea. The main reason I had chosen this trip/venue was the special offer of afternoon tea. end breakfast. breakfast was not the main pull for me, but having afternoon tea in such a venue was what sparked my interest. I was informed by the waiter that Sussex cream tea was complimentary. I wish I knew this in advance that my expectation would be limited, better still I would not have booked it.

3rd time back now. Initially a bit dissapointed with the room provided due to a couple of niggly bits including the heating not working. It was a cold wet couple of days there. However when reported to staff we were provided with a fan heater for the first night and the second day it was fixed. So the moral of the story is if you dont ask you dont get and no point moaning on review sites. Room issues were resolved without fuss so again helped us give it the high ratings it deserves

Public rooms are good, cream tea overlooking lawns a nice freebie and excellent location for parking and then participating in car show on departure day. Travelzoo deal still very good.
Other Comments
West facing bedroom far too hot on sunny day (and following night) - no aircon. Would go back if room location sorted
