Why We Love This Hotel

  • This clifftop hotel is in Eastbourne's Meads area, close to the town centre and the South Downs National Park
  • The hotel gardens have impressive sea views and there are two restaurants on site (dinner must be pre-booked)
  • Beachy Head, a chalk headland with views along the south coast, is a 5-minute drive away; Pevensey Castle, William the Conqueror's first stronghold, is less than 25 minutes' drive away
  • The moated Bodiam Castle and partially ruined Battle Abbey are within an hour's drive

"This is an excellent hotel and we enjoyed the whole of our stay. The staff were very helpful and courteous, the room was large, well appointed and had recently been refurbished. Our cream tea and breakfast were excellent. We would certainly recommend this hotel and love to return."

Hydro Hotel, which opened in 1895, is set on a cliff in Eastbourne's Meads area, just over a mile from the town centre and its Grade II-listed pier.

Local attractions include Beachy Head, which Lonely Planet describes as "a spot of thrilling beauty", the South Downs National Park and the Sussex Heritage Coast, which are all a 5-minute drive away.

This area is great for history buffs. Battle Abbey, a partially ruined Benedictine abbey and the site of the last successful invasion of England in 1066, is less than 40 minutes' drive away. Pevensey Castle, the ruins of William the Conqueror's first stronghold, is less than 25 minutes' drive away. Bodiam Castle, an impressive 14th-century moated castle, is less than an hour's drive away.

The hotel has sweeping sea views from its landscaped gardens, which include a croquet lawn and a putting green. There are two restaurants on site, which serve English and French cuisine (dinner must be booked in advance). Afternoon tea can be taken in the conservatory, and there is a lounge and a cocktail bar.

The AA describes the hotel's bedrooms as "attractive and well equipped", and all are individually decorated. Wi-Fi is free.

There is a large free car park adjoining the hotel. The access to Beachy Head and the National Park is very good. We also enjoyed our visit to Eastbourne.

The hotel is lovely the room was clean nice to have a fridge. Shower could be more powerful. If you book afternoon tea with travel zoo be aware all you get is a scone with cream and jam and a pot of tea not a proper Afternoon tea disappointed. Should have a choice to up grade afternoon tea. Breakfast was ok salty bacon sausages a bit rubbery. Staff were really friendly especially Hanna on reception and George our waiter. Check in and out very easy.very quaint hotel takes you back in time. On the whole we would go again.

The one complaint I have is the pipes in the room under the floor making a right racket waking us up at 6 in the morning really annoying considering we was away on a peaceful break.

Lovely food, beautifully served.
Other Comments
Our room was rather small, but very clean. The over-bath shower was not ideal for people in their 70s! The staff were wonderful. Very good value for what we paid.
