Built in 1927, the Pontchartrain Hotel has been a New Orleans treasure for decades and has played host to both celebrities and heads of state. After serving as apartments for a number of years, the hotel has been completely restored for a new generation of Garden District guests and, in 2017, the hotel was named to Travel + Leisure's list of the Best New Hotels in the World.

Marble hallways and vaulted ceilings are an opulent nod to the hotel’s namesake, Count de Pontchartrain, a member of Louis XIV’s court. The hotel's 106 rooms, which are surprisingly spacious for a historic building, are decorated in mint and ivory tones with European- and Caribbean-style furniture. Rooms also include flat-panel TVs, Le Labo bath products, bathrobes and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Positioned on historic St. Charles Avenue, the hotel is far enough from the revelry of the French Quarter that guests can be assured of a quiet, comfortable night’s sleep. With the Josephine Street streetcar stop right outside the hotel, exploring the Big Easy is a breeze -- in a half-hour ride you can find yourself immersed in the vibrant French Quarter (or in 15 minutes by car).

The hotel's famous restaurants received a full makeover with the renovation, with all three original outlets revived by legendary New Orleans chef John Besh and his team. The Caribbean Room with its fine-dining Creole options, the Bayou Bar (reportedly a favorite of Sinatra back in the day) and the Silver Whistle Cafe all have fresh menus, though the classic Silver Whistle blueberry muffins remain.

If you have time to visit just one spot, grab a cocktail at Hot Tin, the hotel's new rooftop bar with "the best view in town" (, where you can let your gaze wander over the downtown skyline and the Mississippi River.

This hotel "grew on us". We visit New Orleans often and usually stay in the French Quarter. We found the hotel's location a bit inconvenient for our needs, but that made us seek out new places to eat and enjoy.

The staff and location were wonderful, it is a beautifully renovated historic hotel in the Garden District. The rooftop bar, Tin Roof, has amazing views and cocktails. The Pontchartrain is right on the St. Charles streetcar line and is convenient to the Quarter, Canal Street, WWII museum, Magazine Street, Audubon Park, etc. I definitely recommend this hotel and will stay there again.

Watching the sunset from the Hot Tin Bar. Braekfast in the Whistle Stop was fun too.

Small things could be better. As soon as we got off the elevator on floor 4, the windows were dirty and not inviting to look out at New Orleans through. Ditto in the Hot Tin Bar, all of the glass table tops looked like they had been wiped with a greasy or dirty rag and put back on the tables tops. Unappealing. Also, the "valet" left A LOT to be desired. Didn't help at check-in with any bags. Had to ask them on two occasions to come get our car at streetside to park it. Once I was told, just leave it there, we'll get to it. Either give us a place to park it ourselves(which we had pre-paid for), or have a responsive valet.
