Grand Hotel Et Des Palmes Palermo is "one of Palermo's most historically fascinating hotels", says Lonely Planet. This palatial hotel dates from the 19th century, and its famous guests include Richard Wagner, Renoir and Arthur Miller. The property was renovated in Art Nouveau style in 1907 by Ernesto Basile, the architect of the Massimo Theatre (Palermo's opera house).

The hotel is on the Via Roma in the city's shopping and dining district, a 10-minute walk from the seafront. It is close to the narrow alleys of the historic centre and a 10-minute walk from the opera house. Palermo Cathedral, which has a glittering mosaic interior, is 20 minutes' walk away, and the Arab-Norman Palazzo dei Normanni (Royal Palace) is a 30-minute walk or a 20-minute taxi journey.

The hotel's three restaurants offer Mediterranean cuisine, and a continental buffet breakfast is laid on in the former ballroom. There's also an atmospheric piano bar in the lobby.

Rooms are very traditional, with antique furnishings, high ceilings and marble bathrooms, and have free Wi-Fi. Deluxe rooms are better by two categories than the standard Classic Rooms, and have a separate living area.

From the press:

  • "This is one of Palermo's most historically fascinating hotels. Like a royal court, it's been the scene of intrigue, liaisons and double-dealings" -- Lonely Planet

  • "A stately 19th-century pile with a grandiose Liberty-style lobby and elegant carpeted rooms" -- The Independent

Great base for seeing all of the great sites of Palermo. If arriving at the train station, then hotel is just about a mile along the main road directly in front as you leave the station. This is closest stop for airport bus.

Its faded grandeur and elegance.

This has been one of Europe's great hotels - and could be again if someone threw some money at it.

Charming staff, fabulous location and amazing decor.

Ideally situated in the centre of Palermo. Short walk to local bars, restaurants and close to stops for the free tourist bus for exploring the ancient city. It's an ancient palazzo so a little faded and quirky but if you like 1920s decor and occasionally worn bits you will love it. If you prefer "concrete and glass" modern hotels I wouldn't bother.
