Dartington Hall is a 14th-century manor set in 800 acres of Grade II-listed gardens on the banks of the River Dart in Devon. The estate is a destination in its own right, with an on-site cinema, a restaurant, a visitor centre and a selection of shops. The hotel hosts events such as the annual Ways with Words Festival, where readers can meet authors and hear guest speakers.

The Grade I-listed property is a 10-minute drive from the edge of Dartmoor National Park -- a place of "honey-tinged moors" and "moss-smothered boulders in woods of twisted trees", says Lonely Planet. Dartmoor was one of the filming locations for Steven Spielberg's "War Horse". Other nearby places to visit include Exeter and Plymouth, and the towns on the English Riviera: Brixham, Torquay and Paignton. All are less than 35 minutes' drive away.

The estate dates from 1388 and was once home to two of Henry VIII's wives: Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr. At its heart is a courtyard containing the restored 14th-century Great Hall. The Guardian describes it as "an enchanting scene". The White Hart overlooks the property's gardens and features fare from local producers.

Ensuite bedrooms are positioned around the medieval courtyard and overlook the grounds. Wi-Fi is free.

The atmosphere and setting of the Hall is terrific - history, culture and beautiful landscape combined.

The Hall is primarily a conference centre, and the rooms and catering reflect this. Having said this, everything is good quality and value - but don’t expect a 5* hotel experience. What you can expect is something much more unique and precious. Go!

This is a must see / must stay absolute one-off. Fabulous! The Hall and the nearby White Hart pub are set in magnificent grounds. The formal garden area is just beautiful. The room was up to date with very comfortable bed and well appointed shower a little annex off of the room where we found we could sit and have tea overlooking the lawned courtyard. The Travelzoo deal we had was outstanding...especially as it included a very drinkable bottle of house wine .

This place is just unique. Dating back to the 13th century yet it’s obviously had money spent on it to ensure up o date facilities are provided. The food in the White Hart was very good and the staff there, and throughout the rest of the hotel, were absolutely lovely. I, and my wife, would love to go again...and WILL!

Beautiful gardens.

Would have been nice if they had supplemented the toiletries and tea making facilities. One small bottle of shower gel, for 2 people over 2 nights is not enough!!

The gardens and the restaurant both for breakfast and evening meal.

We found it difficult getting suitcases upstairs and were not aware our room would be on the second floor. There was a notice saying not to put women's sanitary items down the toilet and to use the bags provided but there were none on either of our two days despite alerting reception. Tissues are not provided or water in the room.

Second floor room up a lot of stairs and corridors and some distance from the car parks. Staff friendly and food very good.

The buildings, gardens and whole setting are beautiful.

The hotel facilities at Dartington Hall did not seem to be run in a professional and efficient way. Having asked for a room with a bath, I was asked why I wanted a bath, was it because it was raining?, which I found very odd. Room was not cleaned on the second day, even though we were out all day. Breakfast was OK, but on the second morning there was a large group staying, only 2 staff and it was fairly chaotic, tables not cleared, food items, mugs etc not replenished and an overflowing bowl of teabags etc next to the coffee machine not emptied for all the half hour or so we were having breakfast. The overall feeling we had is that they were doing us a favour letting us stay, and I don't think guests with Travelzoo bookings were particularly welcome. Also very hard to find reception to check in and restrictions on parking even to drop off one's luggage.

Lovely scenery and good location

The food was mediocre. We asked for bread with the soup, and 5 pounds was added to the bill for 1 and a half slices of bread and butter. I complained and the money was deducted. I have never known any restaurant charge for this before!
