Dartington Hall is a 14th-century manor set in 800 acres of Grade II-listed gardens on the banks of the River Dart in Devon. The estate is a destination in its own right, with an on-site cinema, a restaurant, a visitor centre and a selection of shops. The hotel hosts events such as the annual Ways with Words Festival, where readers can meet authors and hear guest speakers.

The Grade I-listed property is a 10-minute drive from the edge of Dartmoor National Park -- a place of "honey-tinged moors" and "moss-smothered boulders in woods of twisted trees", according to Lonely Planet. Dartmoor was one of the filming locations for Steven Spielberg's "War Horse". Other nearby places to visit include Exeter and Plymouth, and the towns on the English Riviera: Brixham, Torquay and Paignton. All are less than 35 minutes' drive away.

The estate dates from 1388 and was once home to two of Henry VIII's wives: Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr. At its heart is a courtyard containing the restored 14th-century Great Hall. The Guardian describes it as "an enchanting scene". The White Hart restaurant has views over the property's gardens and features fare from local producers.

Ensuite bedrooms are split between the East and West Wings, are positioned around the medieval courtyard and overlook the grounds. Each room has its own individual style and character, in keeping with the original building. Opt for a higher-category room for more space. Wi-Fi is free.

Love the location of Dartington Hall. This is our 3rd visit and each time we have booked via Travelzoo so feel value for money. Hotel is tired in places, but it is functional and good value for the price we paid.

Lovely setting and beautiful gardens. Excellent food and good breakfast in the White Swan. Loved our visit to the Barn Theatre; like stepping back in time. The staff were friendly, helpful and efficient in the hotel, restaurant and cinema.

The staff were very friendly the rooms although not overly large but with the age of the property not expected it but very good bed the en-suite was very modern. The grounds are very extensive and lovely there is one cafe on site which does an array of vegan /vegetarian and a couple of non vegetarian. The white hart pub on site was nice as was the breakfast. The only criticism would be the limited menu and it was pricey but the drinks are not overpriced and the staff very cheerful

A quirky, special, experience in a very historic house in lovely grounds. This is not a 5 star hotel, but an incredibly good value 3 star one. As such, we can only think that the strongly negative comments by some people is more a reflection on them rather than the hotel
