Everything old is new again at the Sheraton Gunter Hotel San Antonio. The historic hotel is located in San Antonio’s theater district, a neighborhood of brick-lined streets and sidewalks with storefronts that have remained mostly unchanged for a century.
Inside, the hotel lobby retains its classic 1900s features like intricately carved mouldings, ornate ceiling medallions and fluted columns but paired with contemporary furniture like cowhide print ottomans and graphically patterned area rugs.
Rooms tend to be on the smaller size, as is the case in most turn of the century hotels, but can vary greatly in size. Be sure to ask at check-in for one of the larger standard rooms. Even those who end up with snug quarters praise the comfy beds and exceptional customer service.
The hotel offers Club Level service which gives guests a free continental breakfast, all-day snacks, free Wi-Fi and a private lounge. Whether you spring for it or not, all guests have access to the outdoor pool, a business lounge and a modern fitness center with all the basics.
The hotel is just a 10-minute walk from the bustling Riverwalk, where locals and tourists both go to eat, drink and people watch. Boudro’s, one of the most beloved eateries in San Antonio for its guacamole prepared tableside, is only a seven-minute walk from the hotel lobby alongside the Riverwalk.
The Majestic Theater, a performing arts center hosting everything from concerts to comedians, is just across the street. Nice conveniences include a Starbucks across the street and a Walgreens just around the corner.
Past guests on TripAdvisor say not to skip the lobby restaurant, Market on Houston, serving three meals a day with an emphasis on local purveyors. This being Texas, the menu includes standard American fare, alongside regionally inspired items like grits with bacon butter. There’s also a separate bakery, bar and a take-away market with everything from wines to gourmet dog treats.
